Abstract

A prosthetic, articulated joint esp. hip joint is of the type in which a metal tang is fixed into an existing bone, e.g. Femur, while a metal shank integral with the than tang extends from the bone to present a conically tapered male end which fits tightly into a correspondingly-tapered female cavity in a spherical ball intended to articulate in a natural or artificial socket; the ball is made of an oxidised ceramic matl. contg. >=99.7% of Al2O3, the oxide powder having a grain size 10 mu and a specific gravity >3.90; the side slant of the male end is the same as that of the female cavity and is between 1:10 - 1:20; and the surface region of the male end is deformable by pressure and/or heat, and/or the ball, cavity surface is profiled to deform the surface region of the male end as it mates with the cavity. The male end is pref. hollow with wall thickness between 2 and 7 mm. the joint will withstand sterilising temps. without fracture of the ceramic and is good for many years of user wear without danger of detachment of male end from ball cavity.
