Description

44347/2 , DO -D D nnna1 Din np OK1? f'pnn Thread supply device for textile machines Aktieholaget IRO C. 42392 This invention relates to a thread storage feeder for feeding thread with intermittent thread _ withdrawal to textile machines, in particular weaving looms.
The feeder can be of either of two types in one of which (cf. British Patents 1168905» 1329657 and 1241718) the storage member rotates to wind on the thread and in the other of which the storage member (or drum) is held stationary and rotating winding means are employed to wind on the thread., By "intermittent thread withdrawal" it is meant that the yarn is withdrawn according to its requirement by the machine or operator. The reservoir can, but need not be, maintained between maximum and minimum limits, automaticall · Thread storage feeders are known in which, if the tension of the thread being wound is sufficiently low, an irregular thread winding is formed on the storage member or drum consisting in part of two or more layers. While this increase the available thread in the reservoir it leads to difficulties of withdrawing the thread at constant tension.
Thread storage feeders are also known in which fixed tapered flanges are formed in the drum for preventing the thread from sliding off; According to the invention there is provided a thread storage feeder for feeding thread to textile machines, in particular weaving looms with intermittent thread with- 44347/2 drawal, comprising a thread storage member, means for winding a thread on the storage member to form a thread reservoir from which thread can be withdrawn in an axial direction according to demand, a thread transport element defining one end of the reservoir for displacing the thread windings axially along the storage member and an annular spreader element defining the axially opposite end of the reservoir and having a thread engaging surface which tapers towards the said one end to meet the reservoir surface of the storage member* Preferably the thread storage feeder includes means for controlling the tensio of the incoming thread so as to form the reservoir windings as an irregular winding consisting in part of two or more layers* ' The spreader element, which Is preferably displaceable and urged e.g. by a spring towards the windings, i.e. in a direction opposite that in which the thread windings are transported, is pushed into the withdrawal area of the thread windings and spreads the thread windings putwardly in the withdrawal area along the surface of the taper. In so doing, the thread windings, which lie on the inside, which were the first to be wound up and which thus will be the first to be removed, are caught initially by the speader elemen and are stretched so that they come to lie outside the subsequent windings. Shis ensures that the thread windings in the withdrawal area consist of only one winding layer over a greater width from which even large 44347/2 amounts of thread can be removed rapidly with a very unifrom tension during withdrawal.
; Preferably the storage member is formed with circumferentially distributed slots runnin parallel to the axis, and the circumference of the spreader element is formed with teeth which define collectively the tapered surface and which engage within the said slots.
The teeth engaging the thread drum slots may abut on the thread windings from the inside of the winding so as to ensure that no thread windings are caught between the thread drum and the dlsplaceable countercone.
The feeder may comprise a switch responsive to displacement of the spreader element for controlling the winding means whereby the reservoir is maintained within maximum and minimum size limits.
In known thread storage feeders, the thread reservoir is monitored and controlled In size either photoelectrlcally or by means of the thread transport element which is movably designed for this purpose. The preferred feature above allows a mechanically simple, stationary thread transport element to be used, e.g. In the form of a frustoconical flange or a swash plate, thus avoiding the difficulties associated with photoelectric monitoring and the spreader element which is movable in to be used for monitoring and controlling the thread reservoir.
An embodiment of the invention is hereafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which 44347/2 Figure 1 is an elevation o$ a thread storage feeder in accordance with the invention, part of which is shown in section, the feeder when used with a loom being mounted horizontally so that Figure 1 is a view from above.
Figure 2 is a partial section through the feeder of Figure 1.
In the drawings, there is shown a thread storage member in the form of a drum 1 comprising longitudinal slots 2 distributed over the circumference thereof parallel to the axis A. The drum 1 is rigidly mounted in a housing 3. It is coaxlally traversed by a hollow shaft 4 with a thread winding and diverting rin 5 fixed thereto to rotate therewith and surrounding the free edge of the drum 1.
A winding eye 6 is secured in the thread diverting ring 5. The hollow shaft 4 can be set in rotation by a motor 7 via a belt drive 8 and an electromagnetic clutch 9· Near the free edge of the drum 1, a thread transport element in the form of a swash plate (cf. British Patent No. 1329657) 10 is wedged onto the outer race of a ball bearing which is in turn mounted on an inclined hub on the hollo shaft. The disc 10 has spokes which protrude through the slots 2 and are connected by an external ring, and it executes a wobble motion as the ring 5 rotates to push the windings along the drum.
A spreader element 11 is provided adjacent the end of the drum 1 opposite to the element 10 and comrises a ring 11a surrounding the thread drum 1 and a plurality of teeth lib corresponding in number to the slots 2. The 44347/2 teeth lib meshingly engage the longitudinal slots 2 so that the element 11 is slidingly guided in thelongitudinal or axial direction of the drum 1 by means of these teeth and of the ring 11a which closely surrounds the circumference of the drum 1 (Figure 2). The surface 11c of the teeth lib which face the plate 10 are inclined towards the disc 10 and the axis A, and define collectively a frustoconical surface which tapers towards the disc 10· The surfaces 11c can be arcuate about the exis A or straight and may be of curved (preferably concave) taper.
Push rods 12, one of which is shown in Figure 1, are distributed over the periphery of the feeder and engage the spreader element 11· These rods are slidingly guided in a wall of the housing 3 and are engaged by tension springs 13 such that they attempt to urge the element 11 in the direction of the plate 10. A switch element 14 is secured to a push rod 12 and co-acts with a switch 15 in a control circuit 16 for controlling the electromagnetic clutch 9· The mode of operation of the feeder is as follows: , She thread F issuing from a storage bobbin (not shown) passes through a thread brake 17, which controls the winding-on tension, and is then conducted into the hollow shaft 4· It emerges therefrom at the remote end of the drum and is diverted radially toward the winding eye 6 of the ring 5· The thread is wound up on the circumference of the stationary drum 1 by rotation of the winding ring 5· The plate 10 executes a wobbling movement 44347/2 arrangement on said shaft and, In doing so, displaces the newly wound-up thread windings in the direction of the arro P.^ in Figure 2. If the thread brake 17 is adjusted to be sufficiently loose, the windings are caused to slide one upon the other so that a thread reservoir is formed on the drum 1 in the form of a loose and irregularly wound winding K which comprises one or more layers in parts (Figure 2).
Due to the actio of the spring, the spreader element 11 is urged in the direction of the arrow Pg so that its teeth lib extend belo and behind the winding K. As Figure 2 clearly illustrates, the thread windings are stretched radially so that a single-layered thread windin VI is formed on the surfaces 11c of the teeth lib formin the spreader element.
The thread is unwound from this single-layered winding area 2 and, as is evident in Figure 1 at F' , passes over the thread diverting ring 5 through the eye of a thread guide 18 arranged coaxially with the drum 1 in order to reach the textile machine, in particular a weaving loom* The spreade element 11 at th same time seves to control the size of the thread reservoir. If this is too small, the push rod 12 moves downwardly due to the pull exerted by the spring 13 far enough, as Illustrated in Figure 1, to cauee the switch 15 to be actuated, thereby engaging the clutch 9 and actuating the winding drive. If the intermediate thread storage exceeds an 44347/2 upper limit, the switching element 14 is disengaged from the switch 15 and stops the winding drive in this manner* This invention is not limited to the embodiment illustrated in the drawings. In particular, it can also be applied to a thread supply device with a rotating drum to which the thread is fed tangentially. In this case, the spreader element 11 and the thread transport element 10 rotate together with the drum, the transport element executing no wobbling motion, with respect to the drum, but rather being continuously maintained in a plane which is inclined in relation to the drum shaft. T e belt pulley can be considered as the winding means. Other thread transport elements may also be employed instead of the element 10, fo example a simple conical flange. Further more, the switch 15 may be arranged directly in the supply circuit of the drive motor 7 if the motor drives only one feeder. The motor 7 can of course be used to drive a number of feeders each having a clutch. 44347/2
