Abstract

1453331 Pliers for closing clips on packages H NIEDECKER 4 Jan 1974 [10 Jan 1973 (2) 11 April 1973] 00435/74 Heading B4W Pliers for applying a U-shaped clip 9, described and claimed in Specification 1,453,332 (see Division E2) to a gathered portion 12 of a packaging material and for closing the clip therearound comprises pivoted arms 1, 2 a housing member 5 integral with one of the arms 1, a plate 6 pivotally mounted on the housing member 5 and having a recess 8 for holding a clip 9 with its open end towards the gathered material 12 when the latter is disposed adjacent a die 19 mounted on the housing member, and a drive connection between the arm 2 and the plate 6 for pivotal movement thereof whereby the clip is made to move in an arcuate path 18 firstly to embrace the gathered portion 12 and then to be closed by the action of the die 19 and plate about the said portion 12. A pivoted spring-loaded lever 13 assists in the correct placing of the gathered material adjacent the die 19. A magazine for supplying the clips extends laterally from the housing member (Fig. 3, not shown). As shown the drive connection includes an extension of the arm 2 and a cam groove 29 in the plate 6 but in an alternative embodiment (Figs. 1-3, not shown) the connection involves a knee type lever. In another embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) a tapered opening in the housing member provides a lead-in for the gathered material to a space adjacent the die.

Description

X P oo 80 p 00 p 18 1 This invention relates to a pliers device for closing packaging envelopes by forcing a closure clip about a gathered portion of a packaging or wrapping the mouth of a bag to close the Such pliers devices in which Compression of the arms of the pliers causes the clip to be fed by a to be wrappe round the gather of the packaging envelope and to be closed round the gather of the packaging envelope on a die have alre been In one such pliers closing the clip is moved gradually towards a closure by closing the arms of the pliers a plurality namely at least three and is then This has the disadvantage that it is impossi to gather and close the gather of the bag by a single closure of the A closing device has also been proposed in which the gathering and the closure is performed by a single closure of the but it is necessary with this before each closure to tension spring which is released at each closure of the pliers and drives the punch with the clip in order to the gather of the packaging The clip is then closed on the die by the closure of the This has the disadvantage that a plurality of manipulations are necessary in order to use the closing According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a pliers device for closing a clip and closed around the gathered portion of the packaging The feeding of the closure clip along a circular arcuate clip path has the advantage that the clip through a can he arranged comparatively close to the die without the insertion of the gather of the packaging envelope obstructed by the clip guide Consequently a structurally simple construction of the closing tools and a compact construction of the closing part of the closing pliers is so that the pliers can be closed with one hand and the clip wrapped and closed around the gather with a single closure of the It has in fact been in the case of a closing device for closing staple to provide an arcuate path in order to feed the staple but in this device the clips are not closed by a punch on a but by pliers In the present the closure clip is conveniently driven on to the die by a which is constructed as a punch by closing the arms of the the drive of the punch plate during the closure of the pliers arms being preferably effected through a knee lever or control The punch plate may also contain a clip which is constructed so that it embraces either wholly or partially the bridge and the two arms of the By the rotary mounting of the punch the punch is guided in a reliable manner with minimum Since the punch plate can also contain the housing for the guidance of the clip through the guide grooves can be which contributes additionally to structural The drive of the punch plate through knee levers or control cams makes possible a particularly favourable whereby the desired high ratio for clip transport and gathering travel is achieved with slight counter and the desired low ratio is achieved for the high counter pressure which exists during the The housing provided in the punch plate for the clip also during the closure of the the die which is correspondingly adapted in its external Therefore the clip can be maintained in the housing until the completion of the closure likewise rendering guide grooves Tilting of the clip in the die is also obviated b this In one embodiment the present it is formed with a preferably in the longitudinal axis of the pliers for the introduction of the gathered portion of the packaging envelope which is to be closed into the housing space in the circular clip guide This has the advantage that the end of the bag can be introduced directly into the housing in which it is maintained by the convergent size of the Where the aperture is fitted in the longitudinal axis of can be passed abruptly round the end of the in a manner corresponding to manipulatio in order to close the In order to enable the invention to be more readily reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings which illustrate and by way of example some embodiments and in Figure 1 is a side view of a closure pliers in an open position but without a clip Figure 2 is a side view of the pliers shown in Figure 1 in a closed Figure 3 a longitudinal section through the closure pliers shown in Figures 1 and 2 but with a lip magazine Figure is a side view of the closure tools of closure in an open position and with a gathering plate Figure a side view showing the same pliers of Figure in a closed Figure 6 is a side view of a closure pliers with a aperture to receive the end of a The closure pliers shown in Figures 1 to 3 comprises pliers arms 1 and 2 which are pivotally connected at 3 and between which is a compression spring The arm 1 is the load arm and comprises a housing element for the individual components of the closure including a punch plate which is mounted rotatably about an axis The punch plate 6 contains a housing 8 for a clip the boundar 10 of the housing 8 embracing the web and the arms of a clip 9 totally or The clip 9 is introduced through an entry aperture 11 into the housing 8 of the punch plate The bunched gather 12 of a packaging envelope is introduced between the housing element 5 and a movable gathering arm 13 into a housing space The gathering arm is rotatably on a bolt 15 and is maintained in a closed position by a return spring A nose 17 of the housing element serves as an additional guide element for the gather Upon closing the the clip 9 guided by the punch plate 6 along a circular arcuate closure path as indicated by the arrow 18 towards a die Along the closure path the gather 12 is further gathered together in the housing space in front of the clip The arms of the clip are guided past one another in parallel grooves on the die The boundary 10 of the housing 8 for the clip 9 then embraces the die order to permit the external surfaces 20 and 21 of the die 19 are likewise of circular The punch plate 6 is driven through a knee lever having one lever arm 22 connected by a bolt to the punch plate 6 and pivotally connected at 2 to the other lever arm 23 which is an extension of the arm 2 the closure It will be seen from Figure 3 that the gathering arm 13 is formed with an indentation 26 which serves as a support for the outer arm of the clip 9 during The clips 9 are accommodated in a 27 and are urged through an entry aperture 11 into the housing 8 by a stirrup spring Figures and 5 show another drive system for a punch plate The punch plate 6 is driven by means of a drive bolt 30 engaging in a control cam 29 and movable by the arm The remaining parts of the pliers shown in Figures and 5 are similar to those of the pliers shown in Figures 1 to 3 and bear the same reference Referring now to Figure there is shown an embodiment of the pliers in which the bunched end of a packaging envelope is introduced through a aperture 35 into a housing space the aperture 35 converging into a constriction which ensures that the gathered end of the bag is maintained in the housing space in such a way that when the pliers is closed the boundary 10 of a housing 8 embraces the gather with the clip and does not damage A movable gatherer which is movable round the pivot point of the punch plate 6 together with the punch additionally gathers the end of the bag when the clip is guided on to the in order that the two arms of the clip cam embrace the gather of the bag without A spacer 37 ensures that the end of the bag does not rest upon the so that the ends of the clip when closed embrace the gather the bag and do not damage Again the remaining parts of the pliers shown in Figure 6 are similar to those of the pliers shown in Figures 1 to 3 and bear the same reference insufficientOCRQuality
