Abstract

1451357 Two-part couplings; terminals BUNKER RAMO CORP 27 Nov 1973 [10 Sept 1973] 54942/73 Heading H2E The contacts of a plug connector each comprises a sheet metal channel shaped terminal portion 36 with side walls 52, 53 and a base wall 54, each side wall having in opposed portions detents 59, 60 inwardly of the channel to form at least one notch 68, 70 for recieving an insulated conductor to be attached to the terminal portion by cutting the insulation and subsequently making electrical connection with the conductor during the reception. Each contact is retained in a respective passage 14 of a moulded mount 12 mounted in a metallic shell (not shown), the retention of the contacts being effected by bonding a tab 42 against the mount. The free edges of the detents provide V-shaped cutting edges (78-80, Fig. 4) and a medial portion (90) for spreading the insulation apart after cutting. [GB1451357A]

Claims (7)

WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. An electrical contact member for electrical connection to a circuit element including an insulation-covered electrical conductor, comprising: a terminal element of thin sheet metal construction including at least one notci for cutting the insulation of said conductor and electrically engaging the underlying conductor; said terminal element further comprising: an elongated channel of U-shaped, cross-sectional configuration with opposite sidewalls/having opposite portions dimpled inwardly to provide at least one pair of inner detents forming and separated by said notch; each of said detents comprisng: a pair of wall sections integrally joined to and spaced apart at the adjoining sidewall, a lower curved; portion at said notch joining said wall sections to provide an enlarged wiping surface for said conductor, and an upper portion at said notch at which said wall sections are separated and include at least one outer taper to form an insulation-cutting surface.
2. The electrical contact member as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said wall sections in said upper portion of each of said detents are separated to form a "V" shape.
3. The electrical contact member as claimed in Claim 2, wherein said "V" shape is symmetrical.
4. The electrical contact member as claimed in Claim 2, wherein said "V" shape is non-symmetrical.
5. The electrical contact member as claimed in Claim 1, wherein each of said detents includes a medial portion shaped to spread said insulation away from the conductor prior to said conductor entering said wiping surface.

The electrical contact member as claimed in Claim 1, including in combination a contact mount formed of molded dielectric material having a plurality of contact-mounting passages with outer 43644/2 ends each being of elongated U-shaped configuration and a plurality of said contact members mounted in said contact passages of said contact mount, each contact member including an active contact element and said terminal element disposed within the contact passage.
7. An electrical contact member according to Claim 1, wherein the separation between said detents is less than the distance between said side walls and wherein said upper portion comprises a free edge including a slit which comprises said at least one outer taper. SC:CB
