Claims (13)

1. . A process for the production of a Lepidopteran insect cell line which comprises culturing under aerobic conditions cells, obtained from a Lepidopteran insect in an insect haemolymph-free medium comprising a source of assimilable carbon, a mammalian serum, essential inorganic salts, amino-acids and vitamins wherein at least part of the requirements of amino-acids is provided in the form of a protein hydrolysate
2. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the mammalian serum is bovine serum.
3. 5- A process as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein all the requirements of amino acids are provided in the form of a protein hydrolysate.
4. A process as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the protein hydrolysate is lactalbumin hydrolysate tryptose broth or a combination of the two.
5. · A process a claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the Lepidoptera insect is Trichopiusia ni.
6. A process as claimed in claim 1 substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the Examples.
7. A cell line produced according to the process as claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
8. A process for the production of insect viruses which comprises infecting a Lepidopteran insect cell line as claimed in Claim 7 with a Nuclear polyhidrosis virus (NPV) , propagating the virus in the cell line, and, after propagation, harvesting the resulting NPV. 43575/2 - .9 -
9. A process as claimed in claim 8 wherein the PV is the NPV. of Autographa callfornica.
10. , 1 0. A process as claimed in claim 8 substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the Examples.
11. Insect viruses prepared according to the process as claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
12. 1 2. Insecticidal composition comprising an insect virus as claimed in claim 1 1 , and a carrier, or a carrier and a surface active agent.

A growth medium for Lepidopteran insect cells for use in a process as claimed in Claim 1, which is free of insect haemolym and which comprises: (a) a source of assimilable carbon; (b) essential inorganic salts; (c) vitamins essential to the growth of Lepidopteran cells; (d) amino-acids all or part of which are provided by a protein hydrolysate; and (e) a mammalia .serum. 1 4. A medium as claimed in claim 13 wherein the protein hydrolysate is tryptose broth or lactalbumin hydrolysate or a combination of the two. 1 5. A medium as claimed in claim 13 or 1½ wherein the mammalian, serum is bovine serum. * 1 6. A medium as claimed in claim 13 substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the Examples.
