Description

43371 /2 INSULATING SEAL FOR TERMINALS OF PRIMARY OR SECONDARY CELLS The present; invention relates to an improved cell cover for electric cells. Although applicable to both primary and secondary cells alike, the invention is especially important for cell covers of secondary cells, such as lead-acid cells and the like. The invention is described in the following with reference to such cells, but it ought to be understood that this is by way of example only.
It is one of the serious problems of electric cells, and especially of lead-acid cells, that the terminal posts, and especially the positive post, ought to be effectively Insulated particularly from the surface of the cell cover through which this post protrudes. Due to dust, 'humidity, acid fumes or a combination of them, the surface of the cell cover of the lead-acid cells is liable to beccme an electric conductor. Any electrical connection between the two temlnal posts will result in creeping currents, apt to cause partial discharge of the cell and at all events it will involve avoidable losses of energy. Such creeping currents might even extend over the surface of the cell box to the ground.
Various designs have been resbrted toffor Insulating such terminal posts, but these have not been entirely sucessful hitherto. Any design that will not absolutely prevent electrical creepage over the cell cover surface is liable to prove unsatisfactory in the long run, especially for stationary, or industrial applications. 43371 /2 ^ So e. g. according to British Patent Specification No. 312, 810 there is provided a vertically arranged tubular member or bushing of umbrella shaped form located where there is an opening in the external surface of the cell, the non flanged end of the tubular member being fixed to or embedded in the cell or battery with the bent over flange outside and spaced from the external surface.
Also this arrangement cannot prevent creeping flow of electrolyte wh i ch may and also not creeping! currents -and -thu-s cause partial discharge of a cell. - la - It is the object of the present invention therefor, to provide a novel terminal post arrangement which over comes the above drawbacks in addition to preventing acid creepage along the post and a consequent corrosion of the herminal. It is of a simple and inexpens construction and can be used with terminal posts of various types.
According to the invention there is provided an insulating seal for terminal posts of primary or secondary cells, this seal comprising a cup-shaped member with an apertured bottom through which the post extends, such member being positioned on the cell cover, an insulating and sealing compound poured into that cup member, and a non conductive cap carried on the post above the said cup, without touching the cup.
In a specific embodiment of the invention, the cup is formed by an upstanding ridge on the top surface of the cell cover.
The invention is illustrated with reference to the enclosed drawings which relate to a terminal post of a stationary lead-acid cell, in which drawings: Figure 1 is a schematical perspective view of a terminal post arrangement, in partial section; Fig. 2 is a schematical vertical section through a post according to the invention.
As shown in Figure 1, the cylindrical lead post 11, is provided with a narrow circumferential rib 12, near its upper end, whereas the top of the cell cover 14 of the post 11. Aroudd the hole 13 extends upwardly a ·' rib'"' c ircular ridge 15* which forms an Integral part of the top of the coyer or whloh Is sInserted into it.
Rib Ridge 15 forms a cup through which the terminal post extends. The post is inserted through the cover, and a suitable sealing compound 16# such as pitch o a resin is filled into the annular space between the post and the ridge 15, after insertion of a sealing rin 15a, This arrangement permits the gradual upward motion of the post 11, due to changes of its dimensions. On top Cf the rSxige 12, and held on the post 11, there /positioned a dome-shaped cap 17, made of suitable plastic material e.g. polypropylene, and which, due to its dimensions is in close fit with the external surfaee of the upper part of the post 11, The lower edge of the cap 17, ©verhangs rib / the upper edge of the circular ridge 15 without touching it.
The construction can be considered to be a "floating seal" asrthe thus established seal will remain efficient and effective even if thejjkerminal post undergoes dimensional changes, which are felt mainly as a slow upward movement of the post, Expefitaslnts have shown that the thus established insulation remains effective enen if acid is spilled on the cell cover and flushed out with water, 18 designates a metal member1, such as a copper bar, cast into the post.

Claims (8)

43371 /2 WHAT IS CLAIMED IS: £/
1. An insulating seal for terminal posts of primary or secondary cells, comprising a cup- shaped member with an apertured bottom through which the said post extend^ such member being positioned on the. cell cover, an insulating and sealing compound poured into that cup member, an a non conductive cap, carried on the post above the said cup, without touching the cup.
2. The arrangement of claim 1, characterised thereby that the said cup member is an integral part of the cell cover.
3. The arrangement of claim 1, characterised thereby that the said cup member is tightly inserted into the top of the cell cover thus creating an annular rib.
4. The arrangement of claim 1, characterised thereby that the said non conducti ve ins.ula.ted cap is carried on a circumferential rib on the terminal post.
5. The arrangement of claim 1, characterised thereby that the said non conductive cap is slip fitted onto the terminal post.
6. The arrangement of claim 1, characterised thereby that the lower edge of the cap extends below the upper edge of the cup member by overhanging it and without touching it.
7. An insulating seal for terminal posts of primary or secondary cells substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
8. Primary or secondary cells whenever equipped with seals according to all or any of the preceding claims. - 4 - \
