Description

A work supporting and rotating device adapted for a flexible work piece comprising a a pair of work supports on base for receiving a cylindrical portion of the work a grinding wheel adapted to operate upon a portion of the piece extending beyond the work a balanced arm medially pivoted on the a driven driving wheel rotatably supported on one end of the arm and adapted drlvingly to engage the portion of the work piece the means on the other end of the arm or counterbalancing the arm and means for adjusting the position the balancing mean to vary the force with which the driving wheel engages the work piece full floating whereby bearing force of the driving wheel is sufficient to drive without distorting the work In patent issued June 1960 to present applican there is illustrated a centerless grinding machine in the work piece rests in a pair of yokes and is rotated therein by separate driving comprising a wheel having a resilient outer end of the workpiece extends beyond one of the yokes into position for engagement with a grinding The driving wheel rotates the work piece in a direction such that the of the work piece and the of the grinding wheel move in opposite In the device disclosed in the above identified the driving wheel is mounted on the end a support arm which pivoted at rear portion so that the driving wheel ca be moved into and out of engagement with the work The force urging the driving wheel into engagement with the work pleas t i in wheel nd the of engagement with by a hydraulic cylinder connected between arm and base of the To limit the downward movement of the an adjustable stop s so that the position of the wheel elation to the resilient surface of the driving wheel may be In the use of the machine disclosed in the above identified difficulties have been encountered in obtaining uniform and reliable driving particularly on pieces of smal care ully adjusted so that excessive pressure is not imparted the However insufficient force is oppl p t dr wheel cannot rotate the work the drag imparted by the The delicate adjustment required to achieve adequate driving force without excessive being applied to the work piece is and greatly reduces the production capacity of the The d i f f i cu ty of proper adjustment is increased by the fiact that if the periphery of the driving wheel is only slightly out of round much greater pressure is applied to the work piece during certain portions of the wheel and during other portion force may be insufficient to the has been found that a wheel out of round by only a few thousands of an inch will not produce factory Another operating difficulty with the machine disc losed in Identified Is the the stop means must be justed for each new diameter of work piece placed the which further reduces the production 3101 2 There provided in accordance with an of the invention a work supporting and rotating device especially adapted for a flexible work piece comprising a a pair of work supports on the base for receiving a cylindrical portion of work a grinding wheel adapted to operate upon a portion of the work piece extending beyond the work a balanced arm medially pivoted on the a driven driving wheel rotatably supported on one end of the arm and adapted drivingly to engage the portion of the work piece between the means on the other end of the arm for balancing the arm and means for adjusting the position of the counterbalancing means to vary the force with which the driving wheel engages the work piece in full floating whereby the bearing force of the driving wheel is sufficient to drive without the work DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES OF THE DRAWING Figure 1 is a o t elevation of a grinding machine embodying the of the invention with the driving wheel in the operating position against the piece Figure 2 is a vie of port ion o the o Figure with the driving wheel in the position is a plan view in Figure ί i Figure 4 is an enlarged view in e of the holding portion and work stop adjusting Figure 5 is a top plan view of the shown in Figure 6 a view of the portion machine showrt 4 as seen from the left end of J Figure 7 is a view of the portion of the machine shown in 4 as seen from the right f T i slidable horizontally to accomodate work pieces of and the block 36 is slidable ically to accurately align the work piece in a desired o in relation to the grinding wheel to workipieces having portions of different diameter along the length thereof An adjustable end stop mechanism which prises bar 42 in a holder a i adjustable block holder 44 is secured to by n g t hr ou s i the holde bolder is adjustable by atable abou t h b o e r a I e d b center of the arc arcuate o enable the stop bar 42 to be p ioned on the pre c v a r To u the rests in the recesses 40 with end or other portion thereof to be ground in contact the rotating grinding wheel The piece W is rotated said recesses in the same direction as the grinding wheel that the contacting surfaces thereof are moving in opposite piece W is rotated by means now to be A fixed support arm 52 is mounted on the support 24 ond is upwardly therefrom in a direction rom the grinding A movable arm 54 is mounted at its medial portion to the end of f end a driving wheel 58 and driving motor and carries on its the cose of extremely it may desired to move the block 46 to the right of the pivot so that a portion of the weight of the block is added to the weight of the motor and driving wheel to increase the pressure against the work The position of the block 46 for any particular desired pressure of the driving wheel against the work piece of depend ights the whatever the position of the the pressure r i v i n g wh t th e o r k 4 c ns v even though the wheel not since the arm is supported only by piece and is free to up and during the rota t o accomodate any lack of concen trie ity of wheel The balance of the arm 54 it easy for the r achine operator to lift the arm to replace the work without any power assistance be ing nec essary When it is desired to temporarily stop the operation of the machine the arm 54 may be lifted and in the upper position by placing a stop pin 66 in an aperture in the support Although in the illustrated embodiment the work holders are spaced elements with it will understood that other or ms of work holders may be used Since certain changes in illustrated device will be apparent to one skilled in the without departing from the insufficientOCRQuality
