Abstract
1436220 Fuel additive composition ROHM & HAAS CO 8 Aug 1973 [11 Aug 1972] 37540/73 Headings C5G and C5D A detergent composition suitable for addition to gasoline to clean the carburetter of an internal combustion engine comprises a mixture of (1) 20-250 parts by weight of a tertiary alkyl C 6 -C 24 primary amine of the formula where R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are alkyl groups containing in total 5-23 carbon atoms, at least one of R 1 , R 2 , and R 3 being branched and (2) 10 to 100 parts by weight of one or more surface active alkyl ammonium carboxylate salt-ethoxylated and/or propoxylated alkyl phenol esters of a trimer or dimer acid, having the formula where n=1À5 to 12À5 in the case of a single compound and is an average number in the case of a mixture; in the case of a trimer acid x is 1 or 2, y is 1 or 2 and x+y=3, or in the case of a dimer acid x=y=1; A = ethylene oxide or propylene oxide; R 4 is C 4-12 alkyl group; R is H or C 4-12 alkyl group; R 6 is a C 2-24 alkyl group which may be straight chain or branched chain, or may be amine substituted and Z is a saturated or unsaturated C 34 -C 51 hydrocarbon acid residue. 150-160 parts by weight of a hydrocarbon-soluble polybutene having a number average molecular weight of 700-3000 may be added to the composition. The polybutene may be replaced by mineral oil. Further the composition may also contain a minor amount of an alcohol, e.g. 5-15 wt. per cent of nbutanol and minor amounts of monocarboxylic C 18 acids in the ester or salt form may be tolerated. The composition may be added in an amount of 30-350 p.p.m. to the fuel. An extensive list of conventional additives is given.

Claims (15)
1. A detergent additive composition, suitable for addition to gasoline, comprising a mixture of (1) 20 to 250 parts by weight of a tertiary alkyl Cg to C primary amine as hereinbefore defined; (2) 10 to 100 parts by weight of one or more surface active alkyl mmonium carboxylate salt-ethoxylated and/or propoxylated alkyl phenol esters -of a trimer or dimer acid, of the formula where in the case of a single compound n is an integer between 1.5 and 12.5 or in the case of a mixture of compounds n is an average number from 1.5 to 12,5; in the case of a salt-ester derived from a trimer acid x is 1 or 2, and y is 1 or 2, the sum of x and y being 3; and in the case of -the- salt-ester derived from dimer acid, both x and y are each 1; A is ethylene oxide or propylene oxide; R„ is an alkyl group containing 4 to 12 carbon atoms; Rc is H or an alkyl group containing 4 to 12 carbon atoms; Rg is an alkyl group containing 2 to 24 carbon atoms which may be straight or branched chain or is an amine substituted alkyl group of 2 to 24 carbon atoms; and Z is a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon acid residue, said hydrocarbon residue having 34 to 51 carbon atoms.
2. A composition as claimed in claim 1 wherein component (1) is present in an amount of 50 to 100 parts by weight.
3. A composition as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 wherein component (2) is present in an amount of 25 to 50 parts by weight.
4. A composition as claimed in any preceding claim wherein (1) the tertiary alkyl primary amine has a carbon atom content of 12 to 22 carbon atoms.
5. A composition as claimed in any preceding claim wherein in the formula of component (2), n is 3 to 10, x is 2, y is 1 and Z is a hydrocarbon acid residue having about 51 carbon atoms.
6. A mult-functional additive composition suitable for addition to distillate hydrocarbon fuels having a major proportion of a hydrocarbon base fuel distilling within the gasoline distillation range, the additive composition comprising a composition as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5 together with 150 to 650 parts by weight having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of from about 700 to about 3000. 1
7. A composition as claimed in claim 6 wherein the polybutene comprises polyisobutylene of number average molecular weight of 950 to 1400.
8. A composition as claimed in any preceding claim wherein n in t e formula of component (2) is 3·
9. A composition as claimed in any one of claims 6 to 8 wherein component (3) is present in an amount of 200 to 400 parts by weight.
10. A composition as claimed in Claim 1 substantially as described in any one of the foregoing Examples.
11. A motor fuel composition comprising (A) a hydrocarbon base fuel boiling in the gasoline boiling or distillation range and (B) ¾¾?ou - 30 to boufc- 350 ppm (of the base fuel by weight) of additive composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5.
12. A motor fuel composition as claimed in claim 11 containing 75 to a oufr- 150 ppm (of the base fuel by weight) of additive composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5.
13. A motor fuel composition comprising (A a hydrocarbon base fuel boiling in the gasoline boiling or distillation range and (B) 180 to 1000 ppm (of the base fuel · by weight) of additive composition as claimed in any one of claims 6 to 8.
14. A motor fuel composition as claimed in claim 13 containing 275 to 550 ppm (of the base fuel by weight) of additive composition as claimed in any one of claims ,6 to 8.
15. A motor fuel composition as claimed in claim 11 or 13 substantially as described in any of the foregoing Examples . - c¾7-
