Claims (1)

  1. 2. A packaged article comprising a sealed container, a sealing element composed of flexible polyvinyl chloride resin enclosed within said container, said sealing element having been previously expanded by contact with a volatile agent which acts as a swelling agent for said sealing agent, said volatile ' agent being unreactive to the material of said container, said sealing element remaining in the expanded condition in said sealed container. 3. , The article of Claim 1 or 2 wherein said -sealing element has a tubular configuration. 4. The article of Claim 1, 2 or 3 wherein said sealing element comprises polyvinyl chloride resin and a plasticizer for the same. 5. The article of any one of the preceding claims wherein said polyvinyl chloride resin contains substantially no filler material. 42826 I z 6. The article of Claim wherein said plasticizer comprises a phthalate plasticizer. 7. The article of Claim 6 wherein said plasticizer comprises di-[2-ethylhexyl] phthalate], 8. The article of any one of the preceding claims wherein said sealing element comprises polyvinyl chloride resin and a plasticizer for the same, and said swelling agent comprises an acetate solvent. 9. The article of Claim 8 wherein said solvent comprises butyl acetate. 10. The article of Claim 8 wherein said plasticizer comprises a phthalate plasticizer. 11. The article of Claim 10 wherein said plasticizer comprises di-[2-ethylhexyl] phthalate. 12. ' The article of Claim 11 wherein said container comprises a heat sealed bag. 13. A method of expanding and retracting a polyvinyl chloride sealing element to cause sealing engagement with a workpiece, which comprises placing a flexible polyvinyl chloride element in a container, placing a quantity of a volatile agent which is capable of swelling siad' polyvinyl chloride element in said container, said volatile agent being unreactive to the material of said container, effecting expansion of said polyvinyl chloride element, sealing said container and maintaining said polyvinyl chloride element in expanded condition in said sealed container, opening said container, applying said expanded sealing element to a workpiece, permitting said volatile agent to evaporate and allowing the sealing element to shrink against the workpiece in sealing engagement therewith. 14. 1 . The method of Claim 13 wherein said polyvinyl chloride resin contains a plasticizer. 15. The method of Claim 13 or 14 wherein said swelling agent comprises an acetate 'solvent, 16. The method of any one of claims 13 through 15 wherein said polyvinyl chloride resin contains substantially no filler material. 17. The method of Claim 14 wherein said plasticizer comprises a phthalate plasticizer. 18. The method of Claim 17 wherein said plasticizer comprises di-[2-ethylhexyl] phthalate. 19. The method of Claim 18 wherein said polyvinyl chloride resin contains substantially no filler material^ and said plasticizer comprises di-[2-ethylhexyl] phthalate. 20. The method of Claim 14 wherein said volatile agent comprises butyl acetate. 21. A packaged article as described and as illustrated in the drawings. 22. The method of sealing workpieces by means of a polyvinyl chloride sealing element as described.
