Abstract
1436001 Shirred sausage casing HOECHST AG 24 July 1973 [26 July 1972] 35134/73 Heading A2B A shirred sausage casing (shown in Fig. 5) has a helical main fold 50 and secondary folds 52 and 53 lying between the helical folds, with each pleats between the main folds overlapping the adjacent fold, the secondary folds in the extended state of the casing (shown in Fig. 7) forming a continuous zig zag line having two series of apices A and B parallel to the helical main fold with alternate sections of the zig zag forming portions of helices in the opposite direction to the main fold. The pitch H of the helical main fold may be 10-29 mm, with corresponding values of # from 9-21. The angle α may be in the range 50-60. The shirred casing may be made from regenerated cellulose having a diameter of 18-40 mm.

Claims (7)
1. A stick which comprises a cylindrical casing shirred to form a hollow cylinder having a helical main fold and secondary folds lying between the windings of In the extended state of t e stick the main fold^the secondary folds/forming a continuous zigzag line having two series of apices, each series being in a line substantially parallel to the helical line of the main fold, the individual sections of the zigzag line forming portions of helices of opposite sense to the main helical fold.
2. A stick which comprises a cylindrical casing shirred to form a hollow cylinder, having a helical main fold and secondary folds lying between the windings of the main fold, the secondary fold forming a continuous zigzag line of alternating longer and shorter folds whose course within the double layer of casing material between superimposed sections of the windings of the helical main fold is defined by a combination of the following characteristics: a) ^he apices of the ziggag line are arranged between the windings of the main fold and the interior space of the stickj b) iiie apices consist of a first series of apices lying on the first layer of the double layer of casing material, and a second series of apices lying on the second layer of the double layer of casing material, beneath the ra id first layerj c) ^ e apices of each of the two series are spaced from each other on the circumference of the stick by arcs subtending approximately the same angle at the axis of the stick, and the angle is substantially the same for both series of apices in one stick. d) jrom a first apex of the first series of apices to a first apex of the second series of apices, thereextends a longer fold which is tangential to the interior space of the hollow cylinder, points to the interior space, and is curved, the said first apex of the first series and said first apex of the second series being offset from O^i another along a circumference of the hollow cylinder^ e) †rom the first of the second series of apices to the second apex (i.e. the one directly following the first apex) of the first series, there extends a shorter fold which is not tangential to the interior space of the hollow cylinder, points away from it, and is curved. f) ^l ain, from this second apex of the first series of apices to the second apex (directly following the first apex) of the second series of apices, there extends a longer fold which may be defined as in d), and this criss-crossing continuous sequence of zigzag folds is repeated over the entire stick in a helical patternj g) longer folds substantially correspond to each other in length and shape; the shorter folds correspond to each other similarly.
3. A stick as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, which when extended and opened out along a generatrix of the cylindrical casing, has a series of parallel oblique lines each corresponding to a full winding of the helical main fold, and between each pair of the said parallel oblique lines a zigzag line, corresponding to the secondary folds, which consist of substantially straight, alternating longer and shorter sections, the apices of the zigzag line forming two series each substantially parallel to the lines of the main fold.
4. A stick as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 , which has substantially no further secondary folds.
5. A stick asr claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the zigzag-shaped secondary fold is such that, when the stick is extended and opened out along a generatrix of the cylinder, each shorter fold of the zigzag forms an angle of between about 50° and 60° with the cutting line, and that *each longer fold of the !zigzag forms an a gle¾/3 with the normal to the cutting line which substantially corresponds to the angle η£ between the line of the helical main fold and the normal to the cutting line, but is inclined in the opposite direction.
6. A stick as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, whose material comprises regenerated cellulose.
7. A stick as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 » substantially as described herein with reference to, and as illustrated by, the accompanying EF/TMA
