Claims (1)

  1. CLAIMS 1. Apparatus for directional solidification a support plate for a mold, a susceptor positioned above the support plate and forming a heating chamber fo the mold, means for filling the mold, and a cooling bath for gradually surrounding the mold with a cooling liquid rom the suppor plate upward for cooling material poured into the mold, the level of said bath being such prior to the pouring operation that the said bath partially submerges the support plate , which thereby serves a support plate for supporting a mold, a container for a liquid for cooling the mold. being below and in a position to surround the support plate, y a heating chamber1 above said container and a ing means associated therewith for beating the mold, and means for providing vertical movement between the support plate and the chamber and container for moving the mold out of the chamber and into the container thereby immersing the mold in a cooling liquid therein. . ■ 6. Apparatus according to claim 5 characterized i including means for controlling the temperature of the liquid within the container. 7. Apparatus according to claims 5-6 characteilzed in that the container is surrounded by heating means and also cooling means. 8. Apparatus according to claim 6 characterized in that the means for controlling the temperature includes a cooling coil surrounding the container adjacent to portions of the surface of the pool of liquid. 9· Apparatus according to claims 5-8 characterized in that the surface of the liquid bath is closely below the bottom of the heating chamber. 10. Apparatus according to claims 5-9 characterized in that the support plate is supported from above the chamber,, 11. Apparatus according to claims 5-10 dbaracterized in including cooling means associated with the container and located adjacent to the level of the surface of the liquid . bath for cooling the bath, and other means also associated vrith the container and located adjacent to the bottom thereof for heating the bath. 12./ The process of making directional solidified cast articles with, use of the apparatus of claims 1-11 characterized in including the steps of making a shell mold having a growth portion at one end, positioning said shell mold. on a support plate with said growth portion open to the plate, heating said mold to a temperature above the melting point of the material to be cast, filling the mold with the material to be cast heated to a temperature substantially above the melting point of the material to be cast, and gradually cooling the plate and mold from bottom to top of the mold in a liquid bath having a temperature . substantially below the melting point of the material to be cast. 13» The process according to claim 12 characterized in that the directionally solidified growth is started at the . support plate prior to the start of the moving of the mold into the bath. 14-c The process according to claims 12-13 characterized in that the mold has a plurality of parallelly arranged . article molds in spaced relation to one another and each has a growth portion at one end and all of which are interconnected for filling. 15» The process according to claim 12 characterized in that the mold has a crystal selector above the growth portion. 16. The process according to claims 12-15 characterized in the additional step of keeping the portion ;of the mold above the level of the liquid gradually surrounding the ' mold at the high temperature during the gradual surrounding of the mold by the liquid. ' 17. The apparatus for directional solidification of alloys as hereinbefore described in claims 1-11 with reference to the accompanying drawings. 18. The process for making directional solidified , cast articles as hereinbefore described in claims 12-16 with reference to the accompanying drawings.
