Claims (1)
1. CLAIM 1. A process for cladding lead or lead alloy (as hereinbefore defined) to a metal substrate, which comprises arranging a sheet of lead or lead alloy (as hereinbefore defined) in substantially parallel closely spaced relationship to a metal substrate, and applying progressively over the surface of the sheet from one of its sides to the opposite and adjacent' eides a bonding force by means of an evenly spread explosive having a detonation ——-—-————-—-——-----———-—-·-"÷--— yelooity of less than 1200 metres per second to drive the ' sheet onto the substrate and metallurgically bond it thereto. •2. A prooess aooording to claim 1, wherein the 'bonding ; force is provided by igniting a substantially uniformly thick 'j layer of explosive composition applied to the surface- of the 11 • sheet remote from the substrate. 3· A process aooording to. olaira 1 or olaim 2 wherein \ the explosive layer has a thiokness of from 6 mm. 'to 25 mm. ■ ' . A prooess accordin to any one of olaims 1 to 3 ,'; ; wherein the initial spaoing of the sheet from the. substrate is • approximately equal to the thiokness of the sheet, 5· A prooess aooording to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the initial spaoing of the sheet from the substrate is from, one to two times the thickness of the sheet. 6· A process according to aiy one of the preoeding olaims wherein the thickness of the sheet is not less than 0.8 mm. 7» A prooess according to any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the substrate is a wall of a container, whereby the ,· prooess produces a lead or lead alloy lining to the wall. · 8. · A method of repairing the lining in lead or lead alloy (as hereinbefore defined) lined containers which oompriees applying lead or lead alloy sheet;'to the defeotive area by the 39342/2 9. A process according to any one of claims 1. to 6 wherein the substrate is located adjacent a shaped support backing, the explosive force forming the substrate to the shape permitted by the support, whereby, shaped composi te material is produced. 10. A process according to any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein lead or lead alloy sheets are simultaneously applied to both sides of a substrate layer by explosive cladding. 11. A method of making a lead or lead alloy (as hereinbefore defined) lined container which comprises fabricating the container from lead or lead alloy clad composite sheet material made by the process of any one of claims 1 to 6, 9 and, 10, and lining the joints between the sheets by the process of claim 7. 12. A process for producing a composite material including a metal substrate clad with lead or lead alloy (as hereinbefore defined), substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing. 13. A composite material made by the process of any one of claims 1 to 6, 9, 10 and 12. 14. A lead or lead alloy (as hereinbefore defined) lined container fabricated from composite sheet material of claim 13. 15. A container lined with lead or lead alloy (as hereinbefore defined) by the process of claim 7. 16. A lead or lead: alloy (as hereinbefore defined) lined container having a lining repaired by the method, of claim 8. For ihe Applicants
