Description
IMPROVEtlENTS IN. SPRINKLERS The present invention concerns a sprinkler of the kind described and claimed in our co-pending Application No. 34625 in which an eccentrically mounted turbine wheel receives its turning moment from a spray of water comin from a nozzle.
The invention is particularly concerned with the turbine wheel of sprinklers of this kind.
The "turbine surface" of the turbine wheel up to now has been formed with small radially extending ridges which break up the stream coming from the nozzle into a thin mist, since the axes of the ridges are at an angle to the axis of the water stream ooming from the nozzle, However, the range of these sprinklers is not very great and thus their use is limited, for example, to the cooling by water of the roofs of chicken coops.
It has been tried to form on this turbine surface deeper and wider radially extending ridges. However, it has been found that while the mist is changed into actual droplets, the range of the sprinkling is not satisfactory.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a turbine surface for turbine wheels of sprinklers of this kind which has a greater sprinkling range than those hitherto known.
The invention consists in a sprinkler of the kind defined wherein the turbine wheel has radially extending ridges at equal angular spacings on its entire surface, which ridges are intersected by a plurality o grooves extending from an imaginary circle between the inner and outer ends of said ridges along sections of chord which are coaxial with the outflow axis of the nozzle.
The invention is illustrated by way of example only, in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vie from below of the turbine wheel according to the invention and Figure 2 is an elevation of the same.
For the sake of better understanding of the invention the reference numerals used in Patent A li where applicable. Thus 8 denotes the turbine wheel, 10 denotes the shaft for the hammer (not shown), 11 the abutment, 12 the bore in the wheel and 16 the protuberances.
According to the invention the turbine surface of turbine 8 is provided with radially extending ridges 20 on its entire surface, i.e. from the outer edge of the circular bearing surface 21 to the outer edge of the turbine wheel itself. These ridges are intersected by a plurality of grooves 22 which extend from an imaginary circle .between the outer edge of the bearing surface 21 and the outer edge of the turbine wheel along sections of chords which are coaxial with the out low axis of the nozzle (not shown) of the sprinkler. In the drawing shown eight such grooves 22 are provided, the width of grooves flaring outwardly. If desired, the grooves may be of equal width throughout.
It has been found that, owing to these intersecting grooves, the sprinkling action of a sprinkler provided with a turbine wheel acoording to the invention has a much longer range, because when a groove 22 is momentarily co-axial with the water stream during the rotation of the turbine wheel, said stream can flow unimpeded so that its full force is utilized, resulting in a long trajectory momentarily, whereupon the stream is again broken up by a
