Abstract
1428365 Moulding fan blades ROLLSROYCE (1971) Ltd 14 March 1973 [15 March 1972] 11954/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division F1] A compressor or ducted fan blade 10 includes integral aerofoil 11 and roof portion 13 of solid material and a platform 24 joined to the blade and made of cellular material. The platform may be of precompressed foamed polyurethane resin, cast around the forged titanium blade in a moulding box (40), Fig. 5 (not shown). Also, the box may include a plurality of blades in a segment or a complete annular array, either before or after assembly on a rotor disc. The blades may be coated with a sealing compound, e.g. polyurethane paint. Adjacent edges at individually formed platforms 24 may have anti-fretting compounds applied by plasma or metal spraying techniques. To avoid cracking due to differential thermal expansion, a layer of a nitrile phenolic may be inserted between the blade and its platform. Again Fig. 7 (not shown) the platforms of two successive rotor rows are joined together.
