I 169 T E L - A V I V P A T E N T S & D E S I G N S O R D I N A N C E 16561/67 SPECIFICATION RO D-MABKING PROCESS AND MACHINE- THEBEFOBl η τ nag n.um .a^npaj im-O^ -p*7,-in FRANCIS ΤΗϋΝΈΝ, a citizen of Switzerland , . of 2A , Rue du Levant, Yverdon, Switzerland, and GUY DU B0U8 UET DE SAINT-FA RDOUX, a citizen of France of 18, .Rue de 1' Orient, Toulouae, France, O HEREBY DECLARE the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement : PiauULj TUBMEN The present Invention relates to a road-marking process and a machine for carrying out this process.
Numerous road-marking processes are already known* One of these, used currently, consists of applying, and spraying respectively, paints In the form of solutions or suspensions on the road surface. These paints are easy to apply; on the other hand, they are slow to dry and result in bottlenecks on much-frequented roads, due to the fact that the principal arteries are partly blocked and are only usable on one way for hours. Besides, the said paints can only be deposited In relatively thin layers on perfectly dry roads. These layers are quickly worn out, poorly resistant to abrasion, to frost and to the frictional forces of vehicle wheels.
There is also known a marking process by the application with heating of a plastics material which can be filled with mineral substances glowed or applied in relief on the lief and subject, for this reason, to shocks each time that a vehicle wheel passes over it. Lastly there is known a process of marking by embedding, with or without heat, a material based on white asphalt, resin or plastics material in the roadway. The process of embedding is carried out by sawing, cutting and scraping or by a "rasping" file. This application is very expensive and has only been used till now for indicating markings at intersections or at their immediate approaches.
Another process consists of applying on the previously cleaned paving, prefabricated bands which are adhesive or glued on the site of operations by means of special machines* These bands can also be applied hot. Their application is done in relief.
There is also known a process of applying road marking "buttons". These buttons, of various forms, are generally of resins with epoxy groups and are glued on hot or cold or even screwed in relief on the roadway.
The process of embedding by prepared shapes or blocks placed in the roadway surface during its fabrication is also known. The prepared recess in then filled by the marking mass hot or cold. Recesses formed during the making of the roadway are sometimes used to embed prefabricated solid forms of various types.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome these drawbacks.
The invention comprises a process which is characterised in that the road covering is modified by grinding a f in the treated part of the covering.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a machine or carrying out the last-mentioned process, said machine comprising an automobile frame, a container for receiving anti-reflecting and non-skid marking material, a discharge tube for the said material and a spreader tip, and is characterised by a ruling mechanism bearing at least one grinding wheel for grinding a band of a predetermined width and depth in the roadway covering and an aspirating hood for removing dusts, the container for receiving material bearing, at its centre, a mixing mechanism driven by the motor of an electrical system and being connected by the tube to the flow tip.
The single figure of the accompanying drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, one embodimen of a machine for operating the road-marking process according to the invention.
The machine shown comprises a road vehicle chassis 1 equipped with all the elements required by such a service.
In the "free" position, this vehicle is steered as an ordinary road vehicle. In "working" position, a fine guiding system by television or optical system 2 enables the driver to control exactly its direction with respect to the marking of the road.
Behind the driver's cab, a ruling mechanism 3, hydraulic or electromechanical, with simple or double action, supports a grinding device comprising at least one grinding wheel 4 intended for grinding the covering of the road sur "free" position of the equipment} b) the automatic or manual operation of the grinding according as it operates to form a continuous or discontinuous line; c) the grinding pressure according to the hardness of the roadway covering.
In the "working" position a feeler 5 has the function of controlling and ensuring: a) the regularity of the depth and the width of the ground band; b) the linear advance of the machine; c) the wear of the grinding wheels 4; d) the synchronisation of the regulating mechanism and of a spreader tip 8 so that the said tip opens when the feeler encounters the front edge of the treated part of the roadway covering.
The control of these different operations enables the vertical position of the grinding wheels for their different uses (continuous single line, continuous double lines) to be governed automatically and in particular to regulate, at will, the pattern of the discontinuous lines.
The vehicle comprises a container 6 intended to contain a reflecting and non-skid marking material which, by a tube 7, leads to the spreading tip 8 which ensures the filling of the hollow formed by grinding. The container 6 is provided with a heating device 9 intended to prepare and maintain the marking material in a good state of flow. A heater 10 is also provided for the pipe 7, while a mixing screw 11 ♦ the spreader tip 8 and prevents segregation of the minerals and the resins contained in the said marking material.
The spreader tip 8 is provided with burners 12 intended to heat the newly ground road covering to burn the combustible part of dusts resulting from forming the depression in the roadway covering and to remove cooling water from the grinding wheel brought by a conduit 13 from a reservoir 14 equipped so as to be fed, if necessary, in full operation by suitable means.
An aspirator hood 15 easily retractable at the time of changing grinding wheels 4, at the same time as their pro- ©ttive covers 16, enables part of the dusts which have accumulated in the drawers, then in bags, or in a silo put in tow, so as to be easily emptied or replaced during operation.
The electrical energy for controlling the different ope* rations, electromechanical, hydraulic Or current for control and television, is led to the machine by a plug 18 and is ensured by a diesel-electrical group provided with all the usual associated means for its different functions and with an adequate reserve of fuel.
Althrough the driver can drive alone in the "free" equipment, an operator is necessary for the "working" state of the equipment.
In order to have visual control as precise as possible, this operator occupies a position on a removable seat 19 which comprises a control box 20. The box 20 is fixed to the end of a flexible cable, can be pulled aside and used when walking on foot or lead under the vehicle in the period of a) of the grinding wheels 4j b) of the cooling (by conduit 13) of the grinding wheels 4j c) of the feed of marking material through the pipe 7 to the spreader tip 8j d) of the burners 12j e) of the aspirator hood 15.
It also receives various warning signals regarding the operation of the machine, signals which are also reproduced on the control board of the driver.
The regulating mechanism 3, the grinding wheels 4, the burners 12 and the spreader tip 8 are generally arranged along the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, but can be dis^ placed, due to the control box 20, laterally on the two longitudinal sides of the machine to enable marking operations to be carried out in the middle of the road or on the side edges of the latter.
The machine shown comprises, furthermore, a reservoir 21 containing glass beads intended to be distributed on the surface of the material deposited to give it an immediate reflecting effect.
The introduction of glass pearls in the flowing mass is controlled from the bo 20. A 22, arranged in front of the burners 12 and associated if necessary with a blowing means, enables dusts to be expelled after grinding. Finally, a mechanical arm 23 facilitates changing of the grinding wheels which, in new or used condition, are stored in 24.
As a modification, there may be provided an automatic o i a conver ance stem so that the machine follows exactl programmer to obtain the discontinuous lines. Lastly, the grinding device could be located at the front of the machine in place of being at the centre of the latter, as shown in the drawing.
It will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the process: and device hereinbefore described without departing from the invention as defined in scope by the appended claims.
