»BO-)B -»sm¾ pDuns »nVa 'DODD ' κτη i» nn I (we) TECHNIC L INFORMATION SERVICE, SOCIETE OE PER80NNES, A RESPONSAB I L I TE LI ITEB, A BODY CORPORATE ORGANISED AND EXISTING UNDER THE LAWS OF BELGIUM, OF KLEERK0PERS8TRAAT 17f BRUSSELS, (BELGIUM). do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement :- Processes are already known for the fabrication of nonwoven textile produots by needling packs of fibres on an appropriate needle felting machine. Such fibre packs are usually assembled by means of a carding machine in combination with a fibre pack former, whereby the fibres may or may not be impregnated by some binding means.
The needle feltin machine comprizes a large number of barbed needles, which are intended to be passed through the fibre pack, so that the needles each time pull a number of fibres with them, finally producing an intertwining of all the fibres.
Usually the fibre pack is needled once or several times on one side and then also once or several times on the other side, this process being eventually repeated once or several times on one or on both sides jcif the fibre pack.
She final product thus obtained will have two sides of different appearance and namely the side into which the needles penetrated during the final operation (hereafter called inner side) and the other side (hereafter called outer side).
What we now call outer side is that side which will later be on the outside of the fabricated textile product, whilst the inner side will be located inside the textile product.
For some articles, such as blankets for instance, this difference in appearance constitutes a considerable disadvantage, mainly in the European countries, where the idea itself of a high quality blanket is associated with such blanke s which have an identical outer covering of equal height on both sides. Further, it is practically impossible to obtain a so-called "double face" blanket, its i.e. a blanket having a different colour on both sides, by means of the known process.
Such blankets must be manufactured by needling two fibre packs placed on top of each other, each pack having one of the desired colours, whereby however the fibres of one pack penetrate into the other pack in consequence of the needling operation. It is thus inevitable that a certain mixture of colours appears on both sides.
The purpose of the present invention is to eliminate the abovementioned drawbacks. With this in view, a novel process for the fabrication of nonwoven textile products is revealed, which consists mainly of: the preparation of at least two fibre webs or fibre packs; the separate needling of each pack on a needle felting machine, in itself well known, and the permanentl-y- joinin of the two needled packs, whereby each fibre pack will show as oute surface that side which is opposite to the side into which the needles penetrated last. The packs using are assembled «£ natural and/or synthetic fibres in an appropriate device, itself well known, such as for instance a carding machine in combination with a fibre pack forming device, and can be either reinforced or not, during or after preparation, with some binding means, fabric, foam backing, or any combination of such various means. Next, each fibre pack is subjected to needling on a needle felting machine, either once or several times on one side, or once or several times on one side followed by once or this operation may several times on the other side, and/s¾e¾ eventually be according to the nature several times repeated /l^-&aao-- -oa- of the "basic materials of the fibre packs and of the effect one wishes to obtain.
Two or more such needled fibre packs are now brought together in such a way that the outer surface of the final assembly consists of outer surfaces of the individual packs of fibres.
In these conditions, the top and the bottom fibre packs may very well be of different colour and of different constituent basic materials. The thus assembled fibre packs are then attached to one another by any appropriate means such as gluing, sticking, bonding, rolling, sewing, knitting, or by so-called foam bonding, thermoplastic powders or fibres, etc.
Finally the fibre packs prepared in this manner are subjected to one or more finishing operations, such as for instance ironing, roughing, beating, brushing, curling, friezing, etc. and/or are provided with some appropriate hair covering.
In certain forms of embodiment according to the present invention, a reinforcing and/or insulating layer is fitted between the two needled fibre packs, this layer and aforesaid fibre packs then being bonded together. In yet another form of embodiment, foam rubber or P.V.C. foam are chosen as intermediate layer, in which case a so-called "matelass^" effect is obtained in the course of the finishing operations by the application of seams or by calendering. Printing on these products is also possible. for ; Merely as- information and without the slightest intent of limitation, a form of embodiment according to the present invent on will he described in greater detail below.
A wool mixture composed of: 70 New Zealand wool type 114 » degree of fineness 4-6 * s - 50' s,and 30 of Irish wool with degree of fineness 50 ' s, characterized by the fact that for the Irish wool a very springy, nervous and highly frizzled sort was taken; at least 40$ of this wool mixture is made up of fibres which exceed in length the thickness of the non needled fibre pack by more than 10 centimetres and, in order to obtain a sufficient intertwining of the fibres, use is made of a fibre pack forming device.
This fibre pack is then subjected on both sides to one needling operation, so that 400 interlacings of fibres per square inch are obtained. The needles ( 36 gauge fine needles) hereby carry out an up and down movement of 3/4 inc After each penetration and withdrawal of the needles into and from the fibre pack, the latter is displaced lengthwise by 1/8 inch.
Simultaneously, the needled fibre pack is rolled up upon a large drum. Next, two of these fibre packs (hence 2 of these drums) are brought together in such a manner that aforesaid fibre packs come to lie with their inner surfaces against each other, and such after the inner surface of one of the fibre packs has been sprayed with a binding means, Calendering followed by drying achieves the effect that the two fibre packs are then firmly and invisibly bonded together, but chiefly without the use of any intermediate lining, gauze or such like, thus to form an independent whole.

Claims (7)

Next, the thus obtained fibrous product is treated with a roughing machine combined with a beating device so as. to provide both sides with an identical, longitudinally lying, yet voluminous hair covering. The blanket produced in this manner is then cut to the desired length and width and is seamed off with a ribbon. It is quite obv ous that all sorts of various fibre packs, well known as such, as well as eventual intermedi te layers or binding means may be chosen without going beyond the scope of the present invention. A blanket can for instance be produced using a fibre pack of one basic material, a reinforcing layer of some fabric and a second fibre pack of some different basic material, finally to obtain a blanket having so-called "winter" and "summer" sides. The invention also extends to the textile products themselves which have been manufactured according to the described process. HAVING NOW particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what we claim is:-
1.- Process for the fabrication of nonwoven textile products characterized by the fact that it mainly consists of: the fabrication of at least two fibre webs or fibre packs; the separate needling of each fibre pack on a well known type of needle felting machine; the bringing together of the needled fibre packs and their permanent bonding togethe whereby both the top and the bottom fibre packs of this assembly show as outer surface that side of the individual f bre pack which is opposite to the one into which the needles of aforementioned needle felting machine have last penetrated.
2.- Process according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the two needled fibre packs are joined together by gluing.
3.- Process according to claim 1, characterized by the fact that the two needled fibre packs are joined togethe by sewing.
