Description
SHELL FRAGMENTING CASING WITH INNER PLASTIC LAYER AND METHODS FOR MANUFACTURING SAME Pearl Cohen Zedek Latzer P-5794-1L Shell with a fragmenting outer casing and methods for manufacturing same The invention relates to a shell with a fragmenting outer casing and a plastics film adjoining the internal face of the outer casing, in which plastics film an explosive charge is arranged. The invention relates further to methods for manufacturing such a shell.
A shell of this kind is known, for example, from DE-AS 1 812 462. In this shell the plastics film has a structured area which is provided with a plurality of roof-shaped indentations distributed uniformly on its periphery and facing inwardly, the indentations of adjacent rows being offset with respect to one another. Laterally adjoining the structured area of the plastics film is at least one smooth area of film with which the film rests form-fittingly against the internal wall of the outer casing. As far as the Applicant is aware an elastic propylene (propylene provided with a rubber-elastic admixture) is used as the material for the entire plastics film, i.e. the film comprising both areas.
Tests carried out by the Applicant have shown that the use of such plastic films, in particular in highly-accelerated shells (as used, for example, in modern tank and artillery munitions) is not to be recommended, at least if these shells contain a plastic-bound explosive, since the latter tends to be deformed at high accelerations. If an elastic film material is used, the explosive therefore presses the roof-shaped protuberances outwardly. This can cause fractures to form in the explosive, which can lead to unintended transformation of the explosive and therefore represent a safety risk.
It is the object of the invention to ensure in the case of a shell of the above-mentioned type that even when plastic-bound explosive is used no fracturing of the explosive occurs during the acceleration phase of the shell. In addition, methods for manufacturing such a shell are to be disclosed.
This object is achieved according to the invention by the features of Claim 1 with respect to the shell and by claims 4 and 5 with respect to the methods. Further, especially advantageous embodiments of the invention are disclosed by the subsidiary claims.
The invention is based essentially on the idea of using as the plastics film a film which consists of at least two areas having different strength characteristics. In the structured area the plastics film consists of a deformation-resistant material which prevents inward compression of the roof-shaped indentations by the explosive during the acceleration phase of the shell. In the smooth area, by contrast, the plastics film consists' of an elastic plastics material, so that 'the film in this area is pressed elastically and form-fittingly against the internal wall of the outer casing.
To manufacture the plastics film for the shell according to the invention the areas of deformation-resistant plastics material and of elastic plastics material can be manufactured separately by blow-moulding and then welded or bonded together or joined while in the fusible state during blow-moulding.
However, it is also possible during blow-moulding to manufacture different materials having the same base material segmentally, initially as a one-piece hose which then takes on its final contour in a blow mould. Because the process for producing the hose consisting segmentally of different materials in the blow-moulding machine is computer-controlled, exact reproduceability for the different areas is ensured in this low-cost procedure.
Polypropylene has again proved advantageous as the base material for the plastics film. By means of suitable admixtures a highly deformation-resistant material is obtained on the one hand and a suitably elastic material is obtained (e.g. by means of a rubber-elastic admixture) on the other.
Further details and advantages of the invention are apparent from the following embodiment elucidated wi reference to the Figure.
The Figure shows in a partially sectional side view an explosive shell firable by means of ail artillery weapon, the shell being illustrated in its state before the introduction of an explosive charge and the closure of the front mouth aperture with a percussion fuse.
The shell, which includes a fragmenting outer casing 2 of steel, is denoted by reference numeral 1. A plastics film 3 in which the explosive (not shown) is arranged is located inside the casing 2.
The plastics film 3 includes a central structured area 5 provided with the roof-shaped indentations 4. Adjoining this structured area 5 at the front and rear are respective smooth areas 7, 8 resting form-fittingly against the internal wall 6 of the outer casing 2.
According to the invention the structured area 5 of the plastics film 3 consists of a deformation-resistant plastics material, e.g. polypropylene, optionally glassfibre-reinforced, while the smooth areas 7, 8 of the plastics film 3 consist in each case of an elastic plastics material, e.g. a polypropylene provided with a rubber-elastic admixture.
In the embodiment illustrated the plastics film 3 for the shell 1 according to the invention is composed of separate partial films corresponding to the areas 5, 7, 8 and is welded together in the regions denoted by 9, 10, e.g. by means of ultrasound.
Self-evidently, the invention is not restricted to the above-described embodiment. For example, a different base material, in which the required strength characteristics are induced by appropriate admixtures; can be used instead of polypropylene as the material for the plastics film.
