Abstract

The present invention relates to a security clip for locking the metal barrel bolt in the closed position, called a dual movement security clip for a barrel bolt. This consists of a barrel bolt lock consisting of: a metal plate supporting a bolt shaft. This bolt shaft runs via a guide chamber into a bolt catch plate, which bolt catch plate has an upturned lip. The bolt handle is positioned at the upper portion of length of the bolt shaft, and a groove is inserted on either side of the lower portion of the bolt shaft, wherein the groove on the lower portion of the bolt shaft overlaps with the upturned lip on the bolt catch plate, to lock the bolt in the closed position. This groove, positioned on either side of the lower end of the bolt shaft, enables the bolt lock to close, with the bolt handle folded down in the closed position, from either the left or right side, thus providing the dual movement function to this security clip for the barrel bolt lock. <Figure 5>

Description

Dual movement security clip for a barrel bolt Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a dual movement security clip on the common type of barrel bolt, in use on doors and wooden gates worldwide, to provide a secure means of locking the bolt in closed position. The common barrel bolt has a sliding metal bar, which acts as the bolt shaft, running through a guide chamber and engaging at the end in a separate catch plate, or bolt receiver. This metal bar has a bolt handle, which is positioned at the upper portion of length of the bolt shaft and is used to guide the metal bolt shaft when closing the bolt. The bolt shaft and guide chamber housing the bolt shaft are connected to a back plate, which attaches to the door or gate, and the bolt catch plate is aligned with the end of the metal shaft, on the adjacent gate post, or door jamb. The dual movement security clip function, in this invention, is provided by insertion of two grooves on the lower portion of length of the bolt shaft. A groove positioned on the lower portion of length of the bolt shaft overlaps with an upturned lip on the bolt catch plate, acting as a security catch, so that the bolt locks and cannot be opened by vibration, which commonly occurs when animals make repeated contact with a door or gate. The position of a matching groove on either side at the end on the lower portion of length of the bolt shaft, means the bolt can be used in either left to right closure, or, right to left closure, and the security clip works in either fixture position.
Background to the Invention The common barrel bolt is used on internal and external doors, either as a main bolt on the outside of the door (e.g stable door or gate), or, as an additional security lock on internal doors in dwelling houses. The bolt operates by engaging the metal shaft of the bolt with the receiver catch plate, affixed on the gate post, or door jamb, or on the opposite gate in a pair of gates. However, with vibration from animals a bolt may disengage from the catch, allowing the gate to swing open. This can result in animals breaking free from their holding pen, field or stable. This invention relates in particular to a locking feature for the barrel bolt, a dual movement security clip. The dual movement security clip prevents the opening of the bolt with vibration, as a groove positioned on either side of the lower portion of length of the metal bolt shaft overlaps with an upturned lip on the bolt catch plate, so that the closed bolt will not move from its closed position with vibration. The position of a matching groove on either side of the end of the lower portion of length of the bolt shaft means the bolt can be mounted in a left to right or right to left position.
Statement of the Invention Accordingly, there is provided a dual movement security clip for locking the metal barrel bolt in the 5 closed position, called a dual movement security clip on a barrel bolt. This consists of a barrel bolt, in which two grooves are inserted on opposite sides on the lower portion of length of the bolt’s moving metal shaft, so that a groove overlaps with an upturned lip on the bolt catch plate, when the bolt is in the closed position. The matching grooves positioned on either side of the lower portion of length on the bolt shaft enable the security clip to operate in both the left and right closing positions 10 of the bolt. The dual movement security clip on the barrel bolt locks the bolt in the closed position and prevents the bolt being opened by vibration.
Brief description of the drawings The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description of an embodiment 5 thereof, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 (Page 1/4 drawings) shows a barrel bolt. The bolt shaft, in its guide chamber is mounted on a back plate (1) which connects with the bolt catch plate (2). The sliding bolt shaft, with guide handle (3), positioned on the upper portion of length of the bolt shaft, engages in the bolt catch plate, which is fitted with an upturned lip (4).
Figure 2 (Page 2/4 drawings) shows a side view of the closed bolt.
Figure 3 (Page 2/4 drawings) shows the enlarged view of the catch plate, with the upturned lip (4) of the bolt catch plate engaged with the groove (5), being positioned at the lower portion of length of the bolt shaft.
Figure 4 (Page 3/4 drawings) shows a view of the bolt from the catch plate end, with the groove in 15 the bolt’s metal bar overlapping with the upturned lip of the catch plate.
Figure 5 shows a view of the closed bolt, with all the elements of the system indicated in the presentation, with the bolt closed and the groove overlapping the lip on the bolt catch plate.
Detailed description Referring now to the drawings and initially to Figures 1, 2 and 3, there is illustrated a barrel bolt lock consisting of: a metal plate (1) supporting a bolt shaft (3), which runs via a guide chamber into a bolt catch plate (2), the bolt catch plate having an upturned lip (4); a bolt handle positioned at the upper portion of length of the bolt shaft; a groove (5) inserted on the lower portion of the bolt shaft (3), on either side, wherein the groove (5) on the lower portion of the bolt shaft overlaps with the upturned lip (4) on the bolt catch plate (2), to lock the bolt in the closed position; wherein the groove (5), being provided on either side of the bolt shaft (3), enables the bolt lock to close, with the bolt handle folded down in the closed position, from either the left or right side, thus providing the dual movement function to this security clip for the barrel bolt lock.
Figure 4 shows the detail of the groove (5) positioned on the lower portion of length of bolt shaft overlapping the upturned lip (4) provided on the bolt catch plate (2).
Referring to Figure 5, the entire arrangement of the barrel bolt, with the metal shaft of the bolt (3) inserted in the bolt catch plate (2). The groove (5) positioned at the lower portion of length of the bolt’s metal shaft is shown overlapped with the upturned lip (4) provided in the bolt catch plate (2). Figure 5 shows the bolt closed in the left to right position. The groove positioned on the opposite side of the lower portion of length of the bolt shaft will function when the bolt is closed in the right to left position, and the bolt is then locked.
Presently, when the bolt is closed, with the bolt handle folded down in the closed position, the groove positioned on the lower portion of length of the bolt shaft overlaps with the upturned lip on the bolt catch plate, providing a security clip, locking the bolt.
