Abstract
The invention relates to the visual safety of vehicles in the automotive industry, in particular the invention provides vehicle headlight and taillight regions, with high visibility retroreflective safety markings, to enhance vehicle recognition, when a vehicle is been driven with head/dim or taillights, which are not functioning correctly, or have not been turned on. The invention enables vehicles to be more visible to other road users, especially when a badly lit vehicle is being approached from the front or rear. Having the high visibility retroreflective safety markings contained within the light units keeps them clean and vibrant, ensure incoming traffic of the location, true width and type of vehicle they are approaching, by giving the impression of a well lit unit, therefore avoiding accidental collision.
Description
High visibility safety markings to enhance oncoming vehicle recognition.
Field of invention: This invention relates to the automotive industry, and the safety hazard caused by vehicles, 5 cars and trucks, driving the public roads with faulty headlights orTaillights.
Background to the Invention: When vehicles are driven with only one Head/Dim light visible to incoming traffic, it is a serious hazard, causing misjudgement of distance, width and vehicle type of the approaching vehicle. In some instances, drivers sit into their vehicle at night, in a well lit up area, drive onto the public road forgetting to switch on their lights, putting themselves and feilow road users at risk of serious injury. UK Department for Transport accident statistics (2012), report 3S4 accidents were caused by drivers not displaying lights at night or were blamed on poor visibility - which contributed to a total of 195 fatalities. Accordingly there exists a need for all vehicles to be more visible to other road users, especially when a badly lit vehicle is being approached from the front or rear, and in some instances from the side, this said invention pursues a solution with a system of high visibility retro reflective, conspicuity illumination, without the need of a power source from the offending vehicle, and with high visibility retro reflective, conspicuity safety markings strategically positioned to ensure incoming traffic of the location and type of vehicle they are approaching.
Statement of Invention: Accordingly there is provided high visibility retroreffective, conspicuity safety markings strategically positioned on a vehicle, to alert incoming traffic of the true location, size and type of vehicle they are approaching. This invention utilises one or both of two methods of apply high visibility retro reflective, conspicuity safety markings, method lisa series of high visibility retro reflective, conspicuity safety markings, decals, or paint work which can be placed on the edge of the bodywork immediately or approximately totally or partiy surrounding the headlight units or/and taillight units, as plain single width edging or in a decorative fashion, and to further aid visibility other high visibility retroreflective, conspicuity safety markings, can be strategically positioned elsewhere on the vehicle, i.e. bumper, fender or any area ofthe main body. This method can be executed at manufacturing stage or by the owner/mechanic at any stage during the life of the vehicle.
The 2nd and/or additional method is where part or all ofthe internal surfaces ofthe light unit, (behind the lens} which are not required in the efficient distribution of light from the light source filament, maybe fully or partly coated with appropriately coloured highly retro reflective, conspicuity material, other than chrome or mirror, enabling the highly retro reflective, conspicuity material to remain clean and vibrant behind the lens. In most existing vehicles this will aliow visibility from the front and side in relation to the headlight units, and rear and side in relation to the taillight units. Although not exclusively necessary, th is method wou Id be best applied at the ma nufacturing stage of the headlight or ta iilight units. Other or additional high visibility retro reflective, conspicuity markings can be positioned around the rim of the lens, either externally as decals or underneath the lens allowing the markings to remain clean and vibrant. As a further application, the high visibility retro reflective, conspicuity material can be integrated with the adhesive bonding which adheres the lens to the main body ofthe light unit or integrated with the sealing membrane which surrounds the lens.
The advantages of this invention are that, it enables vehicles to be more visible to other road users, especially when a badly lit vehicle is being approached from the front or rear, and in some instances from the side, or in the event of a vehicle having faulty lights or forgetting to switch them on, this invention of high visibility retro reflective, conspicuity safety markings strategically positioned on, in or around or partly around the light units of a vehicle, will ensure incoming traffic of the location and type of vehicle they are approaching, therefore avoiding accidental collision.
Having the high visibility retroreflective, conspicuity safety markings contained within the light unit where possible, will enable the highly retroreflective, conspicuity material to remain clean and vibrant behind the lens. When a vehicle is parked without lights or poorly lit, thesehighvisibilityretroreflective, conspicuitysafetymarkingscontainedwithinthelight unit will best ensure incoming traffic of the location, true width and type of vehicle they are approaching, by giving the impression of a well lit unit.

Detailed Description: Referring now to the drawings and initially to Figure Nola, lb,and lc there is illustrated method 1, a front view of a vehicle (5), with a series of high visibility retroreflective, conspicuity safety markings, decals, or paintwork (1) (3) which can be placed on the edge of the bodywork of ¢5), immediately or approximately, totally or partly surrounding the headlight units (5a), or/and taillight units (5b), as plain single width edging or in a decorative fashion, and to further aid visibility other high visibility retroreflective, conspicuity safety markings, can be strategically positioned elsewhere on the vehicle, i.e. bumper, fender or any area of the main body (2) (4) . This method can be executed at manufacturing stage or by the owner/mechanic at any stage during the life of the vehicle (5).
Referring now to the drawings Figure No2a, and 2b, an isometric view of the front end of a vehicle (5), demonstrating a set of high visibility retroreflective, conspicuity safety decals (1) (2) as they may be positioned on, in or around or partly around the light unit(s) (5a), Referring now to the drawings Figure No2c, and 2d, an isometric view of the rear end of a vehicle (5), demonstrating a set of high visibility retroreflective, conspicuity safety decals (3) (4) as they may be positioned on, in or around or partly around the light unit(s) (5b).
Referring now to the drawings Figure No3a, 3b, 3c and 3d, an isometric view of the 2nd and/or additional method is where part (7) or all of the internal surfaces (8) (10) of the light unit (5a) (5b), behind the lens (8a) (8b) which are not required in the efficient distribution of light from the light source filament (9) (11), maybe fully or partly coated with appropriately coloured highly retro reflective, conspicuity material, other than chrome or mirror, enabling the highly retroreflective, conspicuity material to remain clean and vibrant behind the lens (8a). In most existing vehicles this will allow visibility from the front and side in relation to the headlight units (5a), and rear and side in relation to the tai Hight units (5b), Although not exclusively necessary, this method would be best applied at the manufacturing stage of the headlight or taillrght units. Other or additional high visibility retroreflective, conspicuity safety markings (6) ¢12) can be positioned around the rim of the lens (Sa) (8b), either applied externally as decals or underneath the lens (8a) (3b) allowing the markings to remain clean and vibrant. As a further application, the high visibility retroreflective, conspicuity safety markings material can be integrated with the adhesive bonding (6a) (12a) which adheres the Jens to the main body of the light unit (5a) (5b) or integrated with the sealing membrane (6b) (12b) which surrounds and seals the lens to the main unit.
