Abstract
The twisting wire member (6) comprises a serpentine wire (7) and fixing threads (8) extending substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis (9) of the twisting wire member (6). Control threads (13) which have good constancy of length under tension are laid parallel to the longitudinal axis (9) and are linked to the twisting wire member (6) by adjacent fixing threads (8).
Description
This invention relates to a sealing profile which incorporates reinforcement in the form of a twisting wire member embedded therein, wherein the twisting wire member comprises a serpentine wire and fixing threads connected to the wire and extending substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the twisting wire member.
It is known to manufacture such sealing profiles by coating the twisting wire member with elastomers and/or plastics material. The temperatures of 180 to 250°C which occur in the manufacturing process, with subsequent cooling to room temperature, cause a shrinkage of the sealing profile. A part of this shrinkage is . attributed to the elastomer and/or plastics material and a part of the shrinkage is attributed to the fixing threads of the twisting wire member. During the manufacture of such sealing profiles they are normally drawn through the finishing plant. When, at the end of the finishing process, these tensile forces are no longer present, the length extension of the sealing profile created by the tensile forces disappears again to the greatest possible extent on account of its inherent elasticity. There therefore occurs a length reduction of the sealing profile comparable with the shrinkage. All these length reductions have in the past led to the fact that upon separation of lengths of sealing profile provided with tolerances this must be done with particular care and also with considerable cost. Thus, in many cases, one cuts off these lengths, following the finishing process for the sealing profile, dimensions. These sealing hrr ί initially only with rough profile pieces are then left Oi'ENTOPLE section JNL No -2for several hours or days before, in a separate cutting process, the fixed lengths of the sealing profile are produced to within the prescribed tolerances.
With known twisting wire members of the type first mentioned above (US 3,198,689 and US 4,517,233) several fixing strands of polyester, cotton, fibreglass or thin wire are provided next to each other and are interwoven with transversely extending sections of the wire loops of the twisting wire member. Although it is true that the wire loops are thereby fixed sufficiently in relation to one another by the fixing strands, the aforementioned length extension cannot be avoided.
From US 4,304,816 it is known to lay, preferably in the centre of a metallic carrier, a flexible, substantially inextensible strand of synthetic material, for example of glass fibres, which can be adhesively fixed to a strip of polyester material. This strip can either be laid loose on the carrier or can be fixed to the carrier by adhesive.
It is an object of the invention to reduce as far as possible all types of length reduction of the sealing profile both during and after the manufacturing process .
This is achieved in accordance with the invention by a sealing profile of the type first referred to above in which the twisting wire member comprises at least one control thread extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the twisting wire member and having good constancy of length under tension.
The fixing threads can be interwoven with the wire. The fixing threads can consist for example of polyester, aromatic polyamides, such as for example aramide, cotton, polypropylene or polyvinyl acetate. The control threads have the effect that all factors -3contributing to the length reduction of the sealing profile during the manufacturing process, because of cooling (shrinkage) and because of finally relieved tensile load, can be kept to a minimum. Shrinkage measurements on twisting wire members made in accordance with the invention have shown that the shrinkage here is in the region of only about 0.5 to 1.5%. By this decisive reduction of the length reduction of the sealing profile occurring during the process, the sealing profile can now be severed on line with small length tolerances.
The control thread or threads may consist of a bundle of glass fibres or a bundle of carbon fibres. These are particularly suitable.
In one embodiment of the invention, said at least one control thread is connected to the wire by the fixing threads. The fixing threads may be interwoven with the control threads and the wire. In this embodiment the control threads can be laid simply on the wire of the twisting wire member and then can be connected to the wire by the fixing threads in a suitable manner.
Preferably, the at least one control thread is coated with a bonding agent in order to improve its bonding to the material of the sealing profile. If needed, the bonding between the control threads and the elastomer and/or plastics material of the sealing profile can be improved in this way. There are numerous adhesives which are suitable for the particular material combinations which can be used for this purpose.
Various arrangements of the control threads can be used in accordance with the invention, for particular applications of use, as set out in claims 7 to 12. -4These and other features and advantages of the invention will now be described in more detail with reference to embodiments of the invention which are described hereinafter and which are shown in the drawings . In the drawings : Fig. 1 is a cross-section through a sealing profile; and Figs. 2 and 3 are two plan views each of a different design of the twisting wire member.
Fig. 1 shows a sealing profile 1 which is made of an elastomer, which is specific for this purpose, and has arms 2 and 3 of a substantially Ushaped lower clamping portion 4 which is arranged to be fastened grippingly to a flange (not shown) of a vehicle body part. The arms 2 and 3 are connected to each other by a web 5.
Reinforcement in the form of a twisting wire member 6 is embedded in the arms 2, 3 and the web 5. This reinforcement ensures stability of shape and fixed seating of the clamping section 4 when this is fitted on to the vehicle flange.
Fig. 2 shows details of the twisting wire member 6 in its substantially flat initial state, before it is embedded in the sealing profile 1 as shown in Fig. 1, for example by co-extrusion.
The twisting wire member 6 comprises an endless serpentine wire 7. The individual loops or bights of the wire 7 are positioned relative to one another by fixing threads 8 which are interwoven with the wire 7. The fixing threads 8 extend substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis 9 of the twisting wire member 6. They extend on the one hand in the region of a central portion 10 of the twisting wire member 6 and on the other hand along side edges 11 and 12 of the twisting wire member 6. -5In all the Figures of the drawings the same parts are indicated by the respective same reference numerals .
As shown in Fig. 2, five fixing threads 8 are interwoven with the wire 7 in the region of the central portion 10. In this embodiment, along each of the side edges 11 and 12, a control thread 13 is laid on the bights of the wire 7. In other words, the control threads are not interwoven with the wire 7. The control threads 13 which are shown dark in the drawing and which have good constancy of length extend substantially linearly from one end of the twisting wire member 6 to the other end. In the case of Fig. 2, the control threads 13 consist of glass fibre bundles which are coated with a dark adhesive agent in order to improve the adhesion to the elastomer of the sealing profile 1. The control threads 13 are thereby bonded to the wire 7 so that they and the wire 7 are interwoven by fixing threads 8.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, fixing threads 8 which are interwoven with the wire 7 extend on the one hand along the side edges 11 and 12 and on the other hand right in the central region 10. At a small lateral distance from the central fixing threads 8, control threads 13 are laid on the bights of the wire 7 and are each interwoven with the wire by a fixing thread 8.
It is alternatively possible to locate fixing threads right in the central region, at a small distance on both sides of the central region and along the side edges. Control threads can then be arranged on both sides of the central fixing thread and moreover along the side edges. All fixing threads are interwoven with the wire and the control threads.
It is also possible to arrange two fixing -6threads along each of the side edges at a small transverse distance from each other. A control thread would then be positioned between each pair of fixing threads. Fixing threads are then arranged additionally on both sides of the central section and a control thread is again arranged right at the central section. Here again, all fixing threads are interwoven with the wire and the control threads.
In another possible embodiment, two fixing threads extend along the one side edge, one fixing thread extends along the other side edge, and two fixing threads are arranged on each side of the central portion. Then, one control thread runs exactly down the centre. A further control thread is laid next to the fixing thread along said other side edge. All fixing threads are in this embodiment interwoven with the wire and partially interwoven with the control threads .
According to a further possible embodiment, two fixing threads extend along the one side edge, and moreover two fixing threads extend on each side of the central region. A further fixing thread is then laid right next to the other side edge. Right at the other side edge several control threads are laid and are interwoven with the wire by the fixing thread which is there. Right at the centre a control thread is interwoven with the wire by at least one fixing thread which is there.
According to yet another possible embodiment, one fixing thread extends along the one side edge, two further fixing threads extend on both sides and at a small distance from the centre, and two more fixing threads extend along the other side edge. One control thread is laid right at the centre. A further control thread is located along the one side edge just inside -7the fixing thread which is there. All fixing threads are again interwoven with the wire and partially interwoven with the control threads.
In yet another possible embodiment of the invention the arrangement of the threads is symmetrical. Two fixing threads are arranged along each of the side edges. A further fixing thread lies at a small lateral distance on each side of the centre, and right at the centre is positioned a control thread. In this embodiment, all fixing threads are interwoven with the wire and in the centre with the control thread.
Claims (13)
1. A sealing profile with a reinforcement formed as a twisting wire member embedded therein, wherein the twisting wire member comprises a serpentine wire and fixing threads connected to the wire and extending substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the twisting wire member, and wherein the twisting wire member comprises at least one control thread extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the twisting wire member and having good constancy of length under tension.
2. A sealing profile according to claim 1, in which at least one control thread consists of a bundle of glass fibres.
3. A sealing profile according to claim 1, in which at least one control thread consists of a bundle of carbon fibres.
4. A sealing profile according to any preceding claim, in which said at least one control thread is connected to the wire by the fixing threads.
5. A sealing profile according to claim 4, in which the fixing threads are interwoven with the control threads and with the wire.
6. A sealing profile according to any preceding claim, in which said at least one control thread is coated with a bonding agent to improve its bonding to the material of the sealing profile.
7. A sealing profile according to any preceding claim, in which said at least one control thread is arranged in a central portion of the twisting wire member.
8. A sealing profile according to one of claims 1 to 6, in which control threads are arranged in a central region and along one side edge of the twisting wire member. -99.
9.A sealing profile according to one of claims 1 to 6, in which control threads are arranged along both side edges of the twisting wire member.
10. A sealing profile according to one of 5 claims 1 to 6, in which control threads are arranged in a central region and along both side edges of the twisting wire member.
11. A sealing profile according to one of claims 1 to 6, in which control threads are arranged in the region of a central portion of the twisting wire member with a transverse spacing from one another.
12. A sealing profile according to one of claims 1 to 6, in which control threads are arranged on the one hand in the region of a central portion of the 15 twisting wire member with a transverse spacing from one another and on the other hand along both side edges of the twisting wire member.
13. A sealing profile substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2 20 or Figs. 1 and 3 of the accompanying drawings.
