Abstract

A striker block for use with an elongate channel-shaped weather excluder (13) comprises an element (10) having a cross-section substantially conforming to the cross-section of the excluder channel (12) so that the element (10) can be inserted snugly in the channel (12) at any desired position along its length. A top surface (17) of the element (10) is exposed at the top of the channel (12) and has a aperture (22) for receiving a bolt (18) extending down from the lower edge of a door. The draught excluder has a pair of draught excluding ribs (16) along the top of the channel walls. <Fig.3>

Description

STRIKER BLOCK FOR A WEATHER EXCLUDER This invention relates to a striker block for use with a channe1-shaped weather excluder of the kind which is located below the lower edge of a door to keep wind and rain from passing between the bottom of the door and the threshold.
A problem arises with channe1-shaped weather excluders when used with pairs of doors having concealed door bolts, i.e. bolts which are contained within the body of the door and emerge from the lower edge of the door when they are fastened. The problem is that the weather excluder is often located below the bolt holes, so that it obstructs the bolt which cannot then engage the threshold.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a striker block for use with an elongate channel-shaped weather excluder of substantially constant-cross section, the block comprising an element having a cross-section substantial1y conforming to the cross-section of the excluder channel so that in use said element may be inserted snugly in said channel at any desired position along its length, a top surface which in use is exposed at the top of the channel for receiving a bolt extending down from the lower edge of a door below which the excluder is located, and means for fixing the element in the channel at a desired position. - 2 The top surface of the element may have a pre-formed aperture to receive a bolt, or the aperture may be drilled after the element is fixed in the channel to match the striking position of the bolt.
The fixing means are preferably a pair of holes for screws, one at either side of the top surface as seen in the direction of the channel, to permit the element to be screwed to the channel , the screws passing through corresponding holes in the excluder and into the underlying threshold.
The element may be made of moulded plastics material, and may be hollow as seen from the underside.
Preferably the bottom surface has a,groove or grooves to permit rainwater collecting in the channel to pass along the length of the channel from one side of the element to the other.
The invention further provides a weather excluder assembly located below the bottom edge of a door with a concealed bolt, the assembly comprising a channel-shaped weather excluder of substantially constant-cross section with its channel facing upwards towards the lower edge of the door, and a striker block fixed in the channel at a position below the point in the lower edge of the door from which the bolt - 3 extends when the door is to be bolted, the block comprising an element having a cross-section substantially conforming to the cross-section of the excluder channel so that said element is accommodated snugly in said channel, and an apertured top surface exposed at the top of the channel for receiving the door bolt.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, where i n s Figure 1 is a perspective top view of a striker block according to the embodiment of the invention, Figure 2 is a perspective bottom view of the striker block of f i gure 1, F igure 3 i s a cut away cross-secti on through a doorway fitted with a channel-shaped weather excluder with the striker block therein, and Figure 4 is a cross-section through figure 3.
The striker block, figures 1 and 2, comprises an element 10 having a cross-section substantial1y conforming to the cross-section of the channel 12 (figures 3 and 4) of a constant cross-section elongate channel-shaped weather - 4 excluder 13 into which the element is to be inserted. In particular, the element 10 has a substantially flat top surface 17 and a rounded front edge 40 which merges with an upwardly and rearwardly inclined bottom surface 11.
The element 10 may be inserted snugly in the channel 12 at any desired position along its length, the rounded front edge 40 fitting under an overhang 42 of the channel 12. The excluder 13 itself is located, channel 12 facing upwards, under the lower edge 14 of a door 15. The excluder carries one or more resilient sealing blades 16 which seal against the lower edge 14 of the door 15 when the door is closed.
The top surface 17 in use is exposed at the top of the channel 12 (figures 3 and 4) for receiving a bolt 18 extending down from the lower edge 14 of the door 15 below which the exc1uder 13 is 1ocated.
The element 10 is fixed in the channel 12 at the desired longitudinal position by a pair of screws 19. These pass through respective holes 20 in the element 10, the holes 20 being provided one at either side of the top surface 17, referred to the direction of the channel 12. The screws 19 pass through correspond!ng holes formed in the excluder 13 and are screwed into the underlying door threshold 21.
The top surface 17 of the element 10 has an aperture 22 to receive the door bolt 18. The aperture 22 may be pre-formed, or drilled after the element 10 is fixed in the channel 12 to match the striking position of the bolt 18.
As shown, the element 10 is be made of moulded plastics material, and is hollow as seen from the underside. Thus the bottom surface 11 of the element 10 in this case consists of the individual surface portions of those parts of the moulding surrounding the hollowed out portion 23.
It is to be understood that where it is stated herein that the element 10 has a cross section substantially conforming to that of the channel 12, this ignores the hollowed out portion 23. Clearly, provided the opposite ends 25 of the element have the desired cross-section, it is immaterial that the element is not solid.
However, the striker block may obviously be formed as a solid element.
Finally, the bottom surface 11 has grooves 24 to permit rainwater collecting in the channel 12 to pass along the length of the channel from one side of the element 10 to the other, for efficient drainage of such water from drainage holes (not shown) in the channel.
