Abstract

The diaphragm (1) of a moving coil microphone is made from a disc of a suitable heat-softened plastics material, and is welded at its outer edge to the end rim of a cylindrical member (2), which is part of the structure of the transducer. A die (5) whose end face has the profile needed for the diaphragm is fitted into the cylindrical member (2) until its end face is close to the diaphragm. Then a pressure chamber (6) with a glass window (9), parallel to the diaphragm is fitted on and sealed. To form the diaphragm (1), heat is applied from an infra-red ray source (11) via the windows (9) to soften the diaphragm. After this, compressed air is applied to the chamber (6) to press the diaphragm against the die face. When the diaphragm is cool the die and chamber are removed. Finally a circular area is removed from the middle of the diaphragm to leave an annular diaphragm. <IMAGE> [GB2134838A]
