Abstract
An array of cuvettes 32 on a turntable 74 is advanced continuously or preferably intermittently along a circular path. Photometer means, preferably having several photometric detectors 52, are mounted on a rotor 56 that advances rapidly compared with the movement of the cuvettes so that each cuvette is monitored many times by a specific photometric detector during each rotation of the turntable. The photometric detectors 52 can operate at several different wavelengths. Many different chemical reactions can be monitored at the same time. Detector signals are converted into digital signals and transmitted from the rotor 56 to a stationary receiver, e.g. as a pulsed train of light signals or by slip rings 110-116. A motor 128 may drive the turntable through stations for automatically dispensing samples and reagents into the cuvettes and for cleaning the cuvettes. Each photodetector may have a separate light source (fig 3, not shown), and the light from the source may be split and pass as two beams through each cuvette at different levels to separate detectors (fig 4, not shown). <IMAGE>
