Abstract
A double-walled transport container has at least one pipe (7, 8) which passes through an outer wall (4) of the container to be disposed between the outer wall (4) and an inner wall (3), of the container. The pipe (7, 8) is provided with a number of outlets (9) which extend in a water-tight manner through the said inner wall (3). The end of the said at least one pipe (7, 8) that passes through the outer wall (4) of the container terminates in a socket (11) provided with a connector (12) within a well-shaped recess (10) in the outer wall (4) of the container so that the socket (11) and connector (12) lie within the external limits of the container.
Description
DOUBLE-WALLED CONTAINER ’’
The present invention relates to- a . double-walled container, and in particular to a double-walled container for use as a transport container. The expression doublewalled in this context means having double walls and a double bottom.
The kind of containers to which the present invention relates are relatively large containers, for example, containers having a transport volume of 300 litres. Such containers are often used for the transport and freezing of fish in blocks. Being double-walled the containers combine a high degree of rigidity with low expenditure of material, and provide relatively good thermal insulation.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improvement in containers of the above type so that they may be used for other purposes, while also providing advantages in conventional use.
One such new application for the containers is the transport of fish for stocking, i.e. the transport of .
fish for the fish breeding industry. At present live fish and the like must be transported by special vehicles or special tanks. This is expensive as well as often
- 2 cumbersome. It is an object of the present invention to 4 enable the use of common transport containers for the transport of fish for breeding.. Such- transport containers are inexpensive and may readily be moved across short distances and be transported by the aid of common vehicles across longer distances.
IO According to the present invention there is provided a double-walled container suitable for use as a transport container in which at least one pipe passes through an outer wall of the container to be disposed between the outer wall and an inner wall of the container and is provided with a number of outlets which extend in a water-tight manner through the said inner wall.
With the aid of the present invention the thawing of fish frozen in blocks within the container may be speeded up by pumping a thawing medium into the container through the pipe. Alternatively fresh fish, for example on board a fishing vessel or during transportation, may be supplied with a coolant, such as supercooled sea water, * so that the fish may be stored for a longer time in a fresh, non- frozen state.
In order to transport live fish for breeding, the transport container is filled with water and during transportation oxygen may be supplied to the water through the piping system so as to enable the fish to be kept in the container for longer periods. .
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a container in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the container of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a cross-section of an inner wall of the container of Figures 1 and 2.
The double-walled container shown in the drawings represents a transport container having a transport volume of 300 litres. The container comprises an inner wall 1, an outer wall 2, an inner bottom 3, and an outer bottom 4. Ducts 5 and 6 are provided in the double bottom 3,4 for the insertion of the fork of a fork truck. Two separate piping systems 7,8 are also provided between the inner and outer bottom 3,4. Pipe 7 extends through inner wall 1 and terminates in a socket 11 in a well-shaped recess 10. Five nozzles 9 are connected to pipe 7 while socket 11 is provided with a connector 12 for joining with an external system for the supply of gas or liquid. Pipe 8 is provided with ten nozzles 9 and, like pipe 7, extends through inner wall 1 to terminate in a socket 11 within recess 10 provided with a connector
12. The nozzles 9 form the outlets from pipes 7 and 8 and have the shape of niples passing through the inner bottom 3 and being firmly moulded therein during production in order to provide a water-tight seal. In order to ensure that the outlets are firmly moulded in the inner wall of the container they may be provided on an outer surface with a number of transversal ribs.
Pipe 7 is intended for connection with a source of oxygen which will provide live fish with the necessary oxygen during storage and transportation in the container.
Pipe 8 is intended for connection with an external source for the supply of a thawing medium, or if desired, ' for the supply of a coolant. With the use of a thawing medium fish frozen in blocks may be thawed more rapidly, and with the use of a coolant, such as supercooled sea water, the quality of fresh fish may be maintained for longer.
ί
The mounting of the pipe systems may readily be carried out during the casting of the containers. The whole 4 piping system with outlet nozzles may -be placed inside a mould before filling with the appropriate raw material 5 and with the aid of special fastening points both the pipes and niples may be held in place. The container may be suitably manufactured of plastics material.
In the embodiment illustrated two particular pipe systems
7,8 are shown. It will be apparent however that the pipe systems may have other designs, and may, in a container lg designed for a particular application, include only one pipe system.
When the container is used for the transportation of fish for breeding, the transportation may be carried out without harming the fish, since the whole supply system for oxygen sits outside the internal bottom 3. There will therefore be no installations inside the container 25 , which might harm the fish.
M
If the container is to be used as a thawing container or a cooling container the whole pipe system will be a 30 firmly integrated part and emptying may be carried out without any damage to the pipes or niples.
- 6 Because easy access is provided to the ends of the pipes they may readily be closed from the outside, so that the container may also be used for other and more conventional purposes.
Claims (5)
1. A double-walled container suitable for use as a transport container in which at least one pipe passes through an outer wall of the container to be disposed between the outer wall and an inner wall of the container and is provided with a number of outlets which extend in a water-tight manner through the said inner wall.
2. A double-walled container in accordance with claim 1, wherein the container is manufactured of plastics material and the outlets are firmly moulded into the said inner wall of the container.
3. A double-walled container in accordance with claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the end of the said at least one pipe that passes through the outer wall of the container 20 terminates in socket provided with a connector, within a well-shaped recess in the outer wall of the container, so that the sockets and connector lie within the external limits of the container.
4. A double-walled container in accordance with any preceding claim, wherein the outlets are shaped as niples and are provided on an outer surface thereof with transversal ribs to ensure that they are firmly moulded -8in the inner wall of the container.
5. A double-walled container according to any of claims 1 to 4 and substantially as herein described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawings.
