Abstract
A plastic bag comprises walls 2 and 3 welded along their edges 4 and 5 and delimiting the bag opening 8, and is provided with a hook or handle means 10 along one side of the bag by means of a joining strip 11, the bag having along one of its sides a portion of material folded inwardly of the bag parallel to the said side to create a bellows formation 12 comprising at least three superimposed thicknesses of material 13, 14 and 15 and the strip 11 being located and secured in the bellows formation.
Description
This invention relates to a plastic bag comprising thicknesses of superimposed material which are so united by welding along their edges that they are free op one pf · the sides of the bag for delimiting the bag opening and provided u/ith handle or hook means united with; the;bag along; one side thereof by means of a joining strip.
A disadvantage of known bags of the aforesaid kind, which are mainly used for packaging products sold in ..selfservice stores and are displayed on racks or shqlyeg ... suspended by the handle or hook means,· is that they offer little resistance to handling and to impact at the point of attachment of the handle or hook means, so that the handle or hook means, for which the joining strip is secured by welding to one of the sides of the bag and projects from that aide, frequently separates from the bag.
In self-service stores, packaged products which can no. longer be suspended at their display units generally become the subject of special sales in which they are sold at a lower than normal price.
It is an object of the invention to eliminate these disadvantages and to provide a bag, at a cost similar to that of known bags, which provides greater resistance at the point of attachment of its handle or hock means than is usually obtained with the known bags. A further advantage sought, in contrast with known bags, is avoidance of projection of the joining atrip from one side of the bag so that risk of the said strip becoming caught or hooked up and torn away is eliminated.
According to the invention, a plastic bag is provided with handle or hook means connected to the bag by a joining strip and ia constituted by a web of material folded to give two superimposed thicknesses of material which are welded to each other at right angles to the fold to form lateral edges of the bag, while the fold constitutes the bottom of the bag and free edges of the said two thicknesses of material bound the bag opening, one of the said two thicknesses of material having a larger surface area than the other, so that it extends beyond the latter from the side of the bag opening, a bellows formation constituted by at least three superimposed said thicknesses being produced along a side of the bag parallel to the bag opening and the said joining atrip being located and secured by welding in the bellows formation.
The bellows formation may be formed, in that part of the said thickness of the material which extends beyond the bag opening, by superimposition of three thicknesses of material, the said joining strip, located in the bellows formation in such a manner that the hook or handle means projects from the bag being connected to the said three thicknesses of material by welding. Alternatively, the bellows formation may be formed, in that part of the said thickness of the material which extends beyond the bag opening, by superimposing four thicknesses of material one of the said four thicknesses forming a flap for covering the bag opening and the said joining strip being located in the bellows formation and being connected by welding to three of the four thicknesses of material forming the bellows so that the thickness of the material constituting the said flap ia free in relation to the said atrip.
The bellows formation may be provided,in the edge of the bag opposite to the bag opening, by superimposing four thicknesses of material, the joining strip being located in the bellows formation and connected by welding to the four thicknesses of material.
It is particularly advantageous if the thicknesses of material which create the bellows formation and to which the strip is united by welding are also connected to each other by welding along the lateral edges of the bag.
Embodiments of the invention by way of example will now be more fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:Figure 1 is a perspective view, partially broken away, 20 illustrating one embodiment of bag in accordance with the invention,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a similar bag, but having a flap in a different position,
Figure 3 is a section on the line III-III in Figure 1, 25 Figures 4 and 6 are views similar to Figure 1, showing modifications of the bag represented in Figures 1 to 3, and
Figures 5 and 7 are, respectively, sections on the
48437 line V-V in Figure 4 and on the lines VII-VII in Figure 6.
Referring to the drawings, in which the same reference numersls indicate identical or analogous elements, a plastic bag 1 comprises two superimposed thicknesses 2,3
plastics material so united by welding along their edges 4 and 5, that the said two thicknesses are free at the side 7 of the bag so as to delimit a bag opening 8. The surface area of the thickness
is larger than that of the thickness 2, so that it extends beyond the latter from the opening 8. The bag 1 is provided with a handle or hook means, such as a hook 10 (Figures 1, 2, 4 and 6), connected to the bag at one sidei thereof by means of a joining strip 11. In all of the embodiments illustrated, the bag 1 has along one of its sides a portion of material folded inwardly of the bag parallel to the said side to create a bellows formation 12 comprising at least three thicknesses 13, 14 and 15 of material, the strip 11 being located in this formation 12 between the thicknesses 14 and 15 and united by welding at 16 over the whole length of its surfaces 17 and 18 to the said three thicknesses of material. By arranging the atrip 11 in the bellows formation 12, the atrip is protected from being accidentally caught up. Moreover, by welding it at both its surfaces to at least three thicknesses of material, its attachment to the bag is considerably strengthened as compared with the mode of attachment in known bags, namely by welding a projecting strip by only one of its surfaces to one of the sides gf , the bag.
» 5«. **5 The bellows formation 12 is advantageously cheated, as shown in Figures 1 to 3, in the thickness 3 of ipstSEiglConstituting one of the sides of the bag 1 and in proximity to the bag opening 8. The bellows formation iq* ppgftucgit by ‘ ;·. superimposing four thicknesses of material 13, 14, 13 snd |3i the thickness 19 being disposed to form 8 flap 20 W|]jc|l .allows the bag opening 8 to be covered, Jhe strip 11 of -·· the bag-suspension hook 10 is located in the' bellows formation 12 between the thicknesses 14 and 15 and ia united by welding along its surface 18 to the thicknesses 13 and 14 and along its surface 17 to the thickness 15, the flap 20 remaining free from the strip 11 in order to permit, as shown in Figure 2, the opening 8 to be completely freed, which facilitates the introduction into the bag of goods to be packaged. Moreover, the possibility of placing the flap 20 flat over the hook 10, so that the latter is totally 'covered, facilitates automatic bagging operations by eliminating risk of goods being bagged being caught by the hook. The three thicknesses 13, 14 and 15 of the bellows formation 12 are united to one another by welding along the edges 4 and 5 of the bag.
The thickness 19 forming the flap 20 could be united, like the thicknesses 13, 14 and 15, by welding to the surface 17 of the strip 11. The attachment of this strip would this be strengthened, but to the detriment of access to the bag opening 8. Advantageously, the surface 21 of the flap 20 affords a zone 22 provided with adhesive which is covered, until the bag is to be closed, by a peelable protective strip 23.
As shown in Figures 4 and 5, the bellows formation 12 may be created in the material thickness 3 constituting one side of the bag, by superimposing three material thicknesses 13, 14 and 15. The joining atrip 11 is attached in the same manner as in the bag shown in Figures 1 to 3, the three thicknesses 13, 14 and 15 being joined by weldiog along the edges 4 and 5 of the bag.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 6, a bellows formation 12 is created in the bottom of the bag by superimposing four material thicknesses 13, 14, 15 and
24. The joining strip 11 is introduced into the bellows formation between the thicknesses 14 and 15 (Fig. 7) and is attached to the bag by the welding of its surface 17 to the thicknesses 15 and 24 and of its surface 18 to the thicknesses 13 and 14, these four thicknesses being joined by welding along the edges 4 and 5 of the bag.
