Abstract
A diaper or sanitary pad has a top sheet 16 of hydrophobic fibres glued or welded to the absorbent pad 14 so as to facilitate moisture pick up.
Description
This invention relates to a disposable product, such as a diaper, sanitary pad, or underpad, and more particularly to a disposable product with a fluid penetrable top sheet.
At present, most disposable products, such as a diaper, use a top cover or top sheet made of 100% rayon. A top sheet made with rayon fibres has certain difficulties in that the rayon fibres hold a significant amount of fluid while permitting high wetback, which causes the wearer’s skin to be kept wet. In order to overcome the difficulties of diapers with rayon fibres, a top sheet of a hydrophobic material, such as polyethylene or polypropylene fibres, has been proposed, such as shown in United States Patent
No. 3,838,692. The hydrophobic top sheets provide for lower fluid wetback, but have the disadvantage of a slow rate of fluid penetration. To overcome this difficulty, various proposals have been made, including providing holes, apertures or slits in the hydrophobic top sheet. Of course, these holes immediately allow high fluid wetback, thereby reducing the advantage of the hydrophobic material as a top sheet.
- 2 48513
The present invention reduces these difficulties and allows rapid fluid penetration while there is low fluid retention by the top sheet and little or no fluid wetback.
The present invention uses a hydrophobic material, such as polyethylene or 5 polypropylene fibres, which are then bonded to an absorbent pad by means of bonding or line embossing, by adhesives, heat sealing, or any other bonding means. The disposable product includes the usual impervious backing sheet and absorbent pad over which the top sheet is applied. The point or line embossing allows the fluid to get into contact with the absorbent pad for immediate penetration. If the hydrophobic sheet is not in contact with the absorbent pad, the fluid will stay on the top sheet longer.
Thus according to the present invention a disposable product comprises a backing sheet, an absorbent pad overlying the said backing sheet and a non-woven hydrophobic top sheet overlying the said pad and means holding the said top sheet in contact with the said pad at locations spaced from the periphery of the said pad, the locations including a plurality of spaced points of contact, or a plurality of spaced lines of contact, or a plurality of rows of spaced points of contact, the top sheet contacting the said absorbent pad in such a way as to form spaced ribs and spaced wells for receiving fluid, the top sheet being spaced away from the absorbent pad at least between adjacent points or lines of contact or rows of points of contact whereby a space is left beneath each raised portion or rib.
The invention may be put into practice in various ways and three specific embodiments will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a diaper according to the present invention using embossed lines of contact;
- 3 4 8 513
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken along the plane of line 2-2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a partial plan view of an alternative embodiment of the invention using lines of adhesive; and
Figure 4 is a partial plan view of another embodiment using spots of adhesive.
In the accompanying drawings, like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views. A disposable absorbent pad 10 such as a diaper, a sanitary pad, or an underpad, is provided with an impervious backing sheet 12 on which an absorbent pad 14 is positioned. A top sheet 16 of hydrophobic material, such as polypropylene or polyethylene fibres, overlies the pad and the backing sheet 12 has its edge portions 18 folded over and heat sealed or otherwise secured to the top sheet to hold the diaper in an assembled condition. As shown in Figure 2, the top sheet and the absorbent pad are embossed along lines of contact 20 to bond them together in such a way that spaced lines of contact spaced from the periphery of the diaper are provided.
As can be seen in Figure 2 the top sheet is thus corrugated and is spaced from the absorbent pad between the lines of contact 20, a substantial space being left beneath each raised rib (between adjacent lines of contact
). These lines of contact serve two purposes. First, they provide means for gathering fluid in the wells between the raised ribs 22 and secondly, the lines of contact pass fluid rapidly to the absorbent pad.
In lieu of the lines of contact 20, points of contact may be provided by embossing or heat sealing. Alternatively, lines of adhesive may be coated on the pad 14, as shown at 26 in Figure 3. Spaced points of adhesive arranged in rows can also be used as shown at 28 in Figure 4.
Claims (4)
1. A disposable product comprising a backing sheet, an absorbent pad overlying the said backing sheet and a non-woven hydrophobic top sheet overlying the said pad and means holding the said top sheet in contact 5 with the said pad at locations spaced from the periphery of the said pad, the locations including a plurality of spaced points of contact, or a plurality of spaced lines of contact, or a plurality of rows of spaced points of contact, the top sheet contacting the said absorbent pad in such a way as to form spaced ribs and spaced wells for receiving fluid, 10 the top sheet being spaced away from the absorbent pad at least between adjacent points or lines of contact or rows of points of contact whereby a space is left beneath each raised portion.
2. A disposable product as claimed in Claim 1 in which the said means holding the top sheet to the pad includes embossing. 15
3. A disposable product as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 in which the said means holding the top sheet to the pad includes adhesive.
4. A disposable diaper as claimed in any one of the preceding claims substantially as specifically described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 or Figures 1 and 3 or Figures 1 and 4 of the accompanying drawings.
