Abstract

1467379 Absorbent pads PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 21 March 1974 [22 March 1973] 12616/74 Heading A5R An absorbent pad suitable for use as a catamenial or incontinence device, comprises a hydrophilic body 2, 2, 3, a hydrophobic top sheet 1, and a bottom sheet 5 extending beyond each end of the body for attachment to a belt, said body comprising a main portion secured to the bottom sheet and a forward extension 3a of lesser bulk which is not so secured, whereby the forward extension is free to bend and form a seal. An upwardly concave cross-section may be imparted to the main body, e.g. by compression to form a depression (25), Figs. 4-6 (not shown), parallel to its length. Top sheet 1 is preferably a non- woven polyester, and the body may be airfelt edge treated with a wet-strengthening agent, or cellulose wadding or rayon mat. An optional backing sheet 4 may be of any pliable, waterproof material, and mey be perforated to permit air circulation. The bottom sheet 5 is preferably formed from two superposed rectangular strips of non-woven plastics material. Stress on the central portion of the napkin is relieved by means of a transverse slit 14 in bottom sheet 5. In assembly, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), tabs 17, 18 and tabs 19, 20 forward of slits 21 of bottom sheet 5 are folded over the edges of core layers 2, 2, 3. Tabs 19, 20 rearward of slits 21 are folded twice and bonded by heat and pressure to form an end extension (24). Similarly tabs 15 and 16 are folded and bonded to form a forward extension (27). Top sheet 1 is then placed on the assembly, and tabs 9-12 are folded over bottom sheet 5 and attached with water resistant glue. Tabs 6-8 and 13 are also glued to the assembly in such a way that the core is enclosed. If backing sheet 4 is absent, or perforated, tabs 9-12 overlap each other on the lower side of the pad.
