Abstract
The process according to the invention consists of adding specific odoriferous substances and flavouring substances to veterinary medical preparations which are designed for oral administration. The purpose of the specific aromatisation is, on the one hand, to mask the pharmaceutical active compounds and, on the other hand, to stimulate appetence. In this way, the consumption of the preparations by the animal to be treated is significantly facilitated.
Description
Thio invention relates to compositions and to methods of manufacture of compositions of pharmaceutical products that have application in veterinary practice, to the products of the said methods of manufacture and to ways of administering the compositions. The purpose of tho invention ia‘to enable the pharmaceutical products to be taken core easily by animals and thus to improve the uptake of tho products by animals being treated by the oral route of administration.
According to the present invention there is provided a composition of a pharmaceutical product for veterinary use, in which the product has added thorofeo or chemically conbinad therein a natural or an artificial odorous or flavouring substance specific to a species and/or to a breed of animal, for oral administration to that species or breed of animal.
The composition may be made by a method including adding or combining a flavouring or odorous substanco to or with a pharmaceutical product, which substance io specific to the species and/or breed of animal.
Tho composition is manufactured in embodiments of the invention by (physically) adding to or chemically combining with a pharmaceutical product without losing odour or flavour a naturally occurring or artificially produced odorous or flavouring substance. In the compositions of those embodiments the odorous or flavouring substance is specifically associated with a particular species or breed of animal? such compositions are for treating the particular
-2breed or species of animal by oral administration.
One or more than one odorous or flavouring substance can be added to or combined with the pharmaceutical product during manufacture of the composition.
In order to enable the invention to be better understood a particular embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example.
In the composition of a pharmaceutical product which is intended to be taken by young pigs, a quantity of an artificial flavouring substance having the flavour of sow’s milk is added to the product in an amount sufficient to flavour the composition and make it more palatable to young pigs. The amount of the substance to be added to the product will be apparent to those skilled in the art of manufacturing compositions of pharmaceutical and feed products containing flavouring substances which are not specifically associated with any particular recipient.
A composition containing the pharmaceutical product and the odorous or flavouring substance can be administered to an animal in one or more states of aggregation with other substances. Furthermore, it can be administered alone, as a mixture with atmospheric air, with the drinking water or with the food of the animal, or with a combination thereof.
It is possible to cover the composition with a coating which may or may not include nourishment or feed components. Furthermore the composition can include a carrier substance for the pharmaceutical element of the
composition. It is possible for the carrier substance to include nourishment or feed components. It will be understood that the odorous or flavouring substance can also be included in the carrier substance.
The amount in the composition of the odorous or flavouring substance employed can be solocted according to tha age and/or the alimentary physiological capaci ty of absorption of the animals.
In one.application of the invention, the amount of the pharmaceutical product In the composition is oo low that the composition haa merely a prophylactic offect on ths animal.
In another application, the content of the pharma·»· eeutical element of the composition merely gives a nutritive character.'
It will bs appreciated that although tha invention has been described, by way of example, with reference to particular embodiments, variations and modifications can be made within the scope of the invention claimed.
Claims (10)

6. The composition as claimed in claim 4, in which the carrier substance includes nourishment or feed components 57. A composition as claimed in claim 1 or any ono of olaims 3 to 6, in which the amount of said odorous or flavouring substances is selected according to the age and/or the alimentary physiological capacity of absorption of tha 5 specific breed or species of animal for whose use tho product is intended.
7. 8. A composition ao claimed in claim 1 or any one of claims 3 to 7, in which the content of the pharmaceutical ! product in the composition is so low that said composition 10 has merely a prophylactic character; or in which the proportion of the pharmaceutical product merely gives a nutritive character.
8. 9» A method of making the composition defined in claim 1 or in any one of claims 3 to 8, comprising adding or 15 combining a flavouring or odorous substance to or with a pharmaceutical product, said substance being specific to the species and/or breed of animal.
