Description

This invention relates to a combination of a pad of separate sheets and binder means therefor having at least one hanger element.
Known binder means of the aforementioned type having two or more wire elements forming successive loops and being received, for example, on each side of one or more notches in the spine of the pad in perforations of a row of perforations punched parallel to the spine. The hanger elements or portions of these devices, which are particularly suitable for calendars, are customarily wire straps having outwardly pointing webs received in the adjacent loops of wire elements next to and on opposite sides of the notch in the spine, the hanger portion, which is arched or loop-shaped resting in the area of the notch in the spine. The wire elements can be constructed as wire spirals the successive coils of which form the loops; wire elements are, however, also'known the loops of which are bent outwardly in the form of hooks at regular intervals orthogonally to the axis of the wire.
All such types of binder devices have, however, the common factor that they require two wire elements separate from each other and a separate hanger element. This complicates the assembly of the pad, in the insertion of the sheets and the fitting together of the parts. - 2 43856 The present invention provides a combination of a pad of separate sheets having holes provided therein adjacent one edge, and binder means therefor comprising a one piece wire element including a plurality of loops arranged at intervals, at least one of the loops being located in the plane of the pad and the other loops insersecting the plane of the pad and being oriented transversely of said plane, each loop located in the plane of the pad being adapted to function as a hanger for said pad and each other loop being adapted to pass through the holes in the pad thereby to bind the pad. For convenience of expression, loops and hooks are referred to generically herein as loops.
The wire element and hanqer or hangers are, consequently,; in one piece and the binding to the pad can thus take place in the simplest manner. The wire element is introduced into the row of holes in the customary way before the twisting around of the loop which is to serve as a hanger. That loop, in any particular clearance opening in the spine of the pad, for example, can be gripped by means of a suitable tool such as a pair of pliers and twisted at least approximately 90° into the place of the pad. Both the manufacture of the binder parts and the binding of the pad by means of this binder system are, thus, considerably simplified as compared with the prior art.
The invention will now be further described by reference to specific, preferred embodiments, as illustrated in the drawings in which:Fig. 1 is an isometric view of a wire element in the form of a wire spiral before insertion into the pad; Fig. 2 is an isometric view of a pad bound by means of the wire spiral of Fig. 1 provided with a hanger loop; Fig. 3 is an Isometric view of a wire element provided with hookshaped loops, the loops being illustrated in their locked configuration, that is, the configuration they would be formed Into (after being inserted into the pad); and Fig. 4 is an isometric view of a pad bound by means of the wire element of Fig. 3 provided with a hanger hook. - 3 43856 The binder device in accordance with Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a wire element 1 constructed as a wire spiral the binder loops 3 of which are formed by the individual wire coils. For binding a pad 2, the wire spiral 1 is screwed in the usual way into a row of holes through the pad and parallel into the spine of the pad. Midway in its length, the pad spine is provided with a gap 2j) interrupting the row of holes at that point. The coil or loop 3a of the spiral 1 which extends into the gap 2b is twisted from its original plane lying transverse to the axis of the spiral coil at least approximately into the plane of the pad: thus, the loop 3a. is still integral with the wire element parts extending on each side of the gap 2b. This twisted loop 3a. acts as a hanger for the pad 2 and the twisting of the loop 3a can oe readily effected in directly consecutive processes on one and the same machine.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, a wire element 11 is provided with hook-shaped circular loops 13 of double wire curving out from the axis of the portions of the wire between the loops 13. In the initial making of the wire element 11, these circular loops 13 are slightly open and are bent into the final position illustrated in Fig. 3 only after having been inserted into the pad 12. Midway in its length, the pad spine is provided with a gap 12b. On each side of the: gap 12b. there is provided a row of punched holes 12a parallel to the spine and through which the loops 13 of the wire element 11 pass. The loop 13a, which extends into the gap 12b, is twisted from its original plane perpendicular to the axis of the wire element 11 at least approximately into the plane of the pad 12 and is also curved upward in such manner, i.e., twisted approximately 180° about the axis of the straight wire segments adjoining the loop 13a, that its hook opening 1s pointed downward; the loop 13.a integral with the wire components on either side of the gap 12b which engage into the row of holes 12a thus form a suspension eye. Here, too, twisting of the loop 13a can be readily carried out by means of a. simple tool, such as a pair of pliers, whereby the placement of the wire element 11 Into the holes 12a in the pad, the closure of the loops 13 and the twisting of the loop 13a can be executed in directly consecutive processes on one and the same machine, - 4 '43856 The embodiments described above are in each case only one centrally located hanger. Nevertheless, they can of course be produced with two or more hangers on the wire element by corresponding twisting of two or more loops at points distributed along the length of the pad spine corresponding to gaps provided in the spine; this is practical especially for comparatively heavy pads, such as maps or posters.
