Y My invention relates to permanent ring binders, more particularly .to binders for sheaves of paper or the like, and the objects of my invention are: I
First: to provide a device. of this class which permanently binds sheaves of paper, such as a check book pad; 1 7
Second: to provide a binder ring which is particularly easy to install in a cover; Third: to provide a binder ring which may be mounted entirely on the edge member of a cover, so that'the leaves'of paper carried thereby, when opened out, occup a centered relation with the cover;
Fourth: to provide a device of this class which comprises a minimum number of parts, and most of these being duplicates in structure, thereby providing a device of this-class which is particularly economical V g other when the seml-clrcular port1ons2' are in of manufacture; and
Fifth: to provide on the whole a novell y constructed permanent ring binder whichis simple of construction, durable, efiicient in its action, and which will not readily de teriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in View as will appear hereinafter, my invention con sists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon, which form apart of this applicatiomin which Figure 1 is a perspective vview of my 7 novel permanent ring binder in its open position; Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof when in its folded position, showing the binding rings in elevation; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the retaining plate for the binding rings; Fig. 4: is an enlarged plan view of the binder ring; Fig. 5 is an en larged side elevational View of one of the binder rings as it appears before installation in the cover; and Fig. 6 Lean enlarged sectional view thereof through 6+6 of Fig. 5.
Similar characters of reference refer to the projections 3 has practicallylthe same slot for each binding ring. Each slot? is similar parts and portions throughoutthe several Views of the drawing.
The binder ring is adapted to be ounted f I on a cover member C comprising; a back leaf G1, a front leaf C2,'and an edge Emember C3, whichfare connected 'together by suitable. flexible webs C4, 'oneontheir outer sides and the other on their inner sides.
This webbing is adaptedto-hinge the back,
front, and edgemembers together.
Thebindingring 1: comprises a pair 'of complementary semi-circular members 2. Each semi-circular member is preferably formed. from round stock and is reduced atone end, forming an ofi'set'projection 3. This projection 3 is offset axially with respect to the axis through the centerof the binding ring. v
The two offset projections 3 overlap each complementaryrelation, and are adapted to receive a pin 4 sons to hinge these two members together. The hinge formedhby cross section .as the two semi-circular tions, as shown best in Fig. 6.
,Theopp'osite ends of eachfsemi-circular portion 2 is provided with'a radially, out- 7 wardly extending arm 5, having a substan-v 'tially 'rectangular crosssection. When the two semi-circular,portions/are in comple;
mentary relation, the two arms 5'are adapted tofit' against each other, as shown best in Figs. 2 and 5,-thus the semi-circulafmembers together form a split ring with the arms 5 disposed adjacent or contiguous 'to the split in saidring. 1
Two or. more binding rings are used with the covers C depending upon the size. In;
addition to the binding rings, there is provided'a retaining plate 6, which is flat and approximately the width of the edge memf ber C3 of the cover. The, retaining plate 6 is provided with two or more slots7, one
adapted to receive the arms 5 of onepair of rlng members when m contiguous relation,
as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, thus1 preventing the p r on of the semicircular portions2. q a
member C3. Thereupon, the protruding portions of the arm 5 are bent over whereby these portions function as elements of a split rivet as indicated by 5a in Fig. 2.
This may be done before the outer flexible web, C4; is placed on the cover, so that the protruding portions 5a may be pressed into the edge members 0 and. be covered and concealed by the outer flexible web C4.
It is obvious from the construction, as illustrated in the drawing and described in the foregoing specification, that I have provided a novelly constructed binding ring and'cover as aimed at and set forth in the objects of the invention, and though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts andportions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction,
combination and} arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described, a
complementary semi-circularportions hinged together at their one ends and provided with radially extending arms at their opposite ends.
-2. In a device of the class described, a binder ring member comprising a pair of complementary semi-circular portions hinged together at their one ends and provided with radially extending arms at their. opposite ends and a retaining means arranged to receive said arms when they are closed together so as to hold said binder ring closed.
3. In a device of the class described, a binder ring comprising a pair of complementary semi-circular portions hinged together at one end and provided with a pair of radially extending arms at their opposite ends, a retaining means arranged to receive said arms when in closed relation so as to hold said binder ring closed, a'cover, said arms adapted to extend through said retaining means, and a portion of said cover and to be bent to form a securing means for securing said binder ring on said cover.
4. In a device of the class described, a
binder ring comprising a pair of complementary semi-circular members, hinge means at one end of each semi-circular member joining the same together, a radially extending arm at the opposite end of each semi-circular member, said binder ring arranged to receive a sheaf of perforated paper by insertion over one of said arms and a retaining means for receiving said arms when close together for holding said binder ring in closed position.

In a device of the class described, a binder ring comprising a pair of complementary semi-circular 1nembers,'hinge means at one end of each ofsa-id semi-circular members joining the same together, a radially extending arm at the opposite end of each semi-circular member, said binder ring arranged to receive asheaf of perforated paper by insertion over one of said arms, a retaining means for receiving said arms when in closed relation so as to hold said binder ring in closed position, a cover for said sheaf said arms adapted to extend through said-retaining means and a portion of said cover and adapted to be bent down to form securing means for mounting said binder ring on said cover. 1
