Abstract

The 1,4-dioxane-2,5-diones conform to the formula <IMAGE> in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 are as defined in Claim 1. They are prepared by a1) reacting an alpha -halo-, alpha -(lower alkanoyl)oxy- or alpha -(lower alkyl)sulphonyloxyacetic acid which is appropriately substituted by R1 and R2 with an alpha -hydroxyacetic acid which is appropriately substituted by R3 and R4 in the presence of a strongly acidic catalyst, or a2) reacting monochloroacetic acid with L-lactide or poly-(D,L-lactic acid) in the presence of antimony trioxide, titanium dioxide or tetraisopropyl titanate, b) rendering the resultant product alkaline, and c) cyclising the product. The homopolymers and copolymers of the 1,4-dioxane-2,5-diones of the formula I are compatible with living human and mammal tissue, can be used surgically and are biodegradable to give tissue-compatible components which are absorbed by living tissues. At least 2% by weight of the 1,4-dioxane-2,5-diones are copolymerised with compounds of the formula <IMAGE> in which R5, R6, R7 and R8 are as defined in Claim 6, by heating in the presence of a catalyst, giving polymers which contain at least 2% by weight of copolymerised compounds of the formula I. The polymers can be used for the production of shaped surgical aids which can be absorbed by living tissue. [GB1494781A]
