Abstract

1489186 Laying submarine pipe-lines BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 30 Dec 1974 [30 Jan 1974] 04241/74 Heading F2P [Also in Division B7] A process for laying a submarine pipe-line adapted to bring ashore crude oil which comprises forming a fibre reinforced pipe from a thermosetting resin within a submerged submarine vehicle capable of moving over the sea bed, weight coating the formed pipe within the vehicle and passing the coated pipe from the submerged vehicle. The fibre reinforcement is glass fibres and/or metal wire and the thermosetting resin is an unsaturated polyester or a polyepoxide. The weight coating consists of an aggregate bonded together with a thermosetting resin, preferably that used in the preparation of the pipe. The pipe may be surrounded by an outer collar thus defining a cavity between the pipe and collar in which the weight coating material is formed. The collar is of a plastics material having an Izod impact strength of greater than 2. There are a series of collars positioned and designed so that the coating material does not have uniform thickness along the pipe so that the coated pipe has increased flexibility. The collar may have internal ribs or projections and adjacent collars may overlap and form a protective cover over the weight coated pipe. In an alternative arrangement an outer cover formed from high density polyethylene is rolled over the pipe and weighting material is introduced between the pipe and the cover. The figure shows a submarine vehicle for laying submarine pipe-line and which is capable of controlled movement on or closely above the sea bed and comprises means 6 for forming a fibre reinforced plastics pipe, means 10 for weight coating the pipe and means, compression chambers 11, 12, for passing the weight coated pipe from the submerged vehicle. There is also means so that the extruding pipe can be directed upwards to the sea surface. The vehicle could be driven by nuclear power and has docking parts 14-17 to which supply pipes or supply submarines can be attached. A mandrel can be provided within the pipe that can be expanded to seal the pipe-line. [GB1489186A]
