Abstract

1433158 Cables PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd 5 Nov 1974 [19 Nov 1973 25 Feb 1974] 53528/73 and 8494/74 Heading F4U [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] A cable installation comprising a cable conductor 14 with an internal duct 16 has a heat pipe 18 within the duct to conduct heat away from a "hot-spot" in the cable and so produce a more uniform temperature distribution along the conductor. The heat pipe may be annular in cross-section (Fig. 2, not shown) and a frictional fit within the internal duct. The outer surface of the heat pipe may be formed with longitudinal or helical flutings frictionally engaging the internal duct and providing passageways for the fluid dielectric, e.g. cable oil. In an accessory, e.g. a joint 10 a second heat pipe 18a extends in the opposite direction from the first heat pipe from a region inside the accessory to a region outside it. Alternatively the heat pipe may extend always within the accessory. [GB1433158A]
