Abstract
1479905 Laying underwater pipe-lines; segment for articulated ramp SAIPEM SpA 16 Oct 1974 [31 Oct 1973] 44853/74 Heading F2P A structure suitable as a segment 71 (Fig. 1) of an articulated ramp for supporting a pipe-line 3 during underwater laying from a surface vessel 1 comprises two upper and two lower, parallel, longitudinally extending, tubular elements containing watertight compartments and held in fixed relative relationship by connecting frame elements, means for pivotally connecting the ends of the upper longitudinally extending tubular elements to the ends of the upper longitudinally extending tubular elements of adjacent segments and rollers for supporting and guiding a pipe-line. The buoyancy of the segment may be varied. A ramp may comprise a plurality of said segments pivotally connected to each other, one segment 71 (Fig. 1) at one end of the ramp being pivotally attachable to the vessel 1. Said one segment 71 may comprise two upper pontoons 81 and two lower pontoons 9 1 interconnected by frame elements 10 1 , 11 1 and 15 1 (Fig. 4). The pipe-line 3 being laid is supported on an adjustable roller 21 supported by a frame 20 which is movable in guides 22 when acted upon by a jack 24 and the pipe-line is guided by rollers 19, 19<SP>1</SP> and 124. The other segments of the ramp may comprise pontoons 8 2 and 9 2 (Fig. 5) connected by elements 102, 112 and 15 2 and fixed position rollers 14, 14<SP>1</SP>, 19, 19<SP>1</SP>, 18, 181 which support and guide the pipe-line 3. Stop means are provided on the lower longitudinally extending tubular elements of each segment to limit the relative pivotal movement of adjacent ramps about their pivotal connection. In use the segment at the end of the ramp is pivotally connected to the vessel 1 which is provided with means for successively welding pipe lengths to the pipe-line being laid, supporting the pipe-line on the vessel, applying the required amount of tension to the pipe-line being laid and imparting to it the required radius of curvature as it leaves the vessel, as described in Specification 1,420,633.
