Abstract
1436423 Electrolytically hydrodimerizing an olefinic compound MONSANTO CO 28 Aug 1973 [28 Aug 1972 6 Aug 1973] 40403/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C7] An olefinic compound having the formula R 2 C=CR-X wherein -X is -CN, -CONR 2 or -COOR<SP>1</SP> (i.e. nitrile, amide or ester), R is H or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>1</SP> is C 1 -C 4 alkyl, is hydrodimerized by electrolysing an aqueous solution having dissolved therein at least 0À1% by weight of the olefinic compound, e.g. acrylonitrile at least 10<SP>-5</SP> g. mol./l. of quaternary ammonium cations preferably C 8 -C 24 tetra-alkylammonium ions containing at least 3 C 2 -C 8 alkyl groups, and at least 0À1% by weight of alkali metal phosphate, borate and/or carbonate in a singlecompartment cell having a carbon steel anode. A Cd, Hg, Tl, Pb, Zn, Sn metal or alloy or graphite cathode may be used. The solution may also contain Na 4 or Na 2 EDTA, Na 4 P 2 O 7 as corrosion inhibitor or NaNO 3 (with Na 2 B 4 O 7 ).
