Abstract

1408254 Hydrogen and oxygen from water EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY 30 Jan 1974 [21 Feb 1973] 04346/74 Heading C1A A process for the preparation of hydrogen and oxygen from water comprises (a) hydrolysing FeCl 2 with water vapour to form Fe 3 O 4 , HCl and H 2 , (b) reacting the Fe 3 O 4 thus formed with a mixture of HCl gas and Cl 2 to form FeCl 3 , water and O 2 , and (c) decomposing the FeCl 3 into FeCl 2 and Cl 2 wherein the FeCl 2 and Cl 2 produced are recycled to steps (a) and (b) respectively. The preferred temperatures for the process are step (a) 450‹ to 650‹ C., step (b) 100‹ to 200‹ C., and step (c) 350‹ to 450‹ C. All or part of the heat required in steps (a), (b) and/or (c) may be provided from a nuclear reactor. The mixed gas used in step (b) preferably has a HCl : Cl 2 molar ratio of 4 to 1. [GB1408254A]
