Abstract
1447771 Electro-hydrodimerization of olefinic compounds MONSANTO CO 28 Aug 1973 [28 Aug 1972] 40402/73 Heading C7B [Also in Division C2] A process for electro-hydrodimerizing an olefinic compound of the Formula: R 2 C = CRX wherein X is CN, CONR 2 or COOR<SP>1</SP>; R is hydrogen or R<SP>1</SP>; and R<SP>1</SP> is (C 1 -C 4 ) alkyl, to give a hydrodimer of the Formula XÀCHRÀCR 2 ÀCR 2 ÀCHRÀX with a molar selectivity of at least 75% based on the converted olefinic compound, comprises electrolyzing an aqueous solution of the olefinic compound having dissolved therein at least 0.1 wt per cent of the olefinic compound, quaternary ammonium cations in a concentration of at least 10<SP>-5</SP> gram mol per litre and at least 0.1 wt per cent of an alkali metal salt in contact with a cathodic surface having a cathode potential sufficient for hydrodimerization of the olefinic compound and consisting essentially of cadmium. In examples acrylonitrile is converted to adiponitrile.
