Abstract

1409926 Floating effluent treatment apparatus W G CASTELL 2 Nov 1973 [21 Nov 1972 26 Oct 1973] 53732/72 and 49961/73 Heading C1C Waste material (e.g. sewage) is treated (e.g. aerobically, chemically or electrolytically) in a moored apparatus which floats on the sea, lakes, estuaries &c. and which comprises at least two vertical concentric cylindrical enclosures, an area of water enclosed by the apparatus being exposed to the atmosphere. The waste may be pre-comminuted or chemicalized, and fed by a seabed pipe from the shore. Treated waste is dispersed in the sea &c. or pumped ashore or into a barge or buoyant container. The apparatus may have a cover which supports navigational warning systems. In Fig. 1, two chambers are defined by flexible ballasted skirts 3 and'4 suspended from concentric rings 1 and 2, and an anchored buoy 8 is attached to ring 1 by cables 11. Sewage and air are pumped from below into the inner chamber, and the treated sewage passes, e.g. by perforated ducts 14, into the outer chamber from which it is removed or is dispersed into the sea through perforations in wall 4. In Fig. 5, sewage from pipe 31 is aerobically oxidized with the aid of compressed air in the outer chamber, then passes via pipes 38 and stilling chamber 37 into the settling chamber defined by wall 33 whence clarified liquid is removed via channel 39 and sludge settles in cones 36 whence it is removed, e.g. by a pipe or air lift, and may be partly recycled to the aeration zone and the surplus aerated in a further enclosure (not shown) prior to discharge.
