Abstract

1450389 Refractory filter for purifying I.C. engine exhaust. Catalytic conversion and combustion IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Oct 1973 [24 Oct 1972] 49078/72 Headings B1F and BIT Exhaust gas from an I.C. engine passes through a filter comprising polycrystalline refractory fibres which retain particulates (e.g. soot) which are then burnt. The fibres may include catalysts such as Ag, Cu and V, which reduce the gas temperature needed to ensure combustion, and platinum group catalysts which raise the filter temperature by encouraging combustion of residual hydrocarbons and CO. Catalysts are fully listed and are variously combined with the fibres. Fibres are typically zirconia and/or alumina of less than 20 microns dia and with crystals of 0.005-0.05 microns dia, packed to density 0.02-0.4 gm/cc, but a large number of pure, mixed and compound materials and dimensions are listed. Fibres may be packed between perforate plates or tubes, either loose or bonded, or formed into paper or felt material which is then made into a filter element. Elements of the flat pleated, spirally and helically wound and stacked sheet configuration are all disclosed, also beds of pellets made of fibres and varying in size in the gas flow direction. A filter by-pass valve may be provided. [GB1450389A]
