Abstract

1416024 Physically refueling an electrical storage device OMF CALIFORNIA Inc 14 Nov 1972 [18 Nov 1971] 52622/72 Heading H1B An electrical energy storage device of the type utilizing a halogen hydrate, an oxidizable metal and a circulating aqueous electrolyte containing a dissolved metal halide as described in Specification 1,339,060 is recharged or refueled by periodically as necessary physically replenishing the oxidizable metal and the halogen hydrate which are progressively consumed during discharge of the device and by withdrawing an amount of the electrolyte to maintain the volume thereof within a preselected range. Preferably the cell utilizes chlorine hydrate, zinc and an aqueous electrolyte of zinc chloride in which the chlorine hydrate is disposed. The hydrate may be replenished by replacing a storage reservoir forming part of the electrolyte circulating system in which prior to discharge a quantity of chlorine hydrate is disposed with a second storage reservoir charged with chlorine hydrate. By this replacement the required adjustment in the volume of the zinc chloride electrolyte is also effected. Alternatively, chlorine hydrate in particulate form suspended in a slurry or as solid pellets or blocks may be inserted into the storage reservoir. In this event excess electrolyte must be separately withdrawn from the system. The zinc may be replaced by (a) replacing the cell of the system by a second, replenished cell, or (b) replacing only the zinc-containing negative electrode of the cell, or (c) passing electrolyte containing a slurry of zinc through porous chambers in the negative electrode whereby the zinc is filtered out by being retained in the chambers. When a number of these cells are used to propel a motor vehicle, for example, a number of roadside stations at which replenishment of the necessary cell components takes place are provided. At such regional or central stations the removed spent components are recharged by appropriately passing a D.C. current through them and subsequently they then form replacement units. An extensive list of elements suitable for the negative electrode metal are given. [GB1416024A]
