Abstract

1421767 Steam reforming BRITISH GAS CORP 22 Feb 1973 [22 March 1972] 13489/72 Heading C5E Reforming a vaporizable hydrocarbon feedstock, e.g. naphtha by reacting it with steam and hydrogen over a reforming catalyst (so called "hydrogasification" process for producing methane) which is progressively rendered inactive by formation thereon of submicroscopic layers of material from the feedstock, e.g. the so called "polymer" build-up, is improved by (1) passing the reactants through a first calayst bed 1 to effect reforming, (2) switching the stream of reactants to a second catalyst bed 2 wherein steam reforming occurs and (3) regenerating bed 1 by passage of hydrogen containing gases and (4) switching again when bed 1 is regenerated and bed 2 is inactive. The regenerative hydrogen containing gases may be the product of the Catalytic Rich Gas Process (C.R.G.), the product of the present process, e.g. the gases produced in the other bed to the one being regenerated wherein methane synthesis from carbon oxides and hydrogen takes place as a side reaction. The catalysts are Ni+trace alkali metal oxide, hydroxide or carbonate on alumina. [GB1421767A]
