1392218 Elastomeric laminates FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO 27 Sept 1972 [27 Sept 1971] 44711/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division B7] A process for the manufacture of an article containing elastomeric components, e.g. a radial or bias ply tyre comprises the steps of compound a layer of elastomeric material, placing it contact with another elastomeric component or components, shaping the layer of elastomeric material and the other elastomeric component(s) to substantially the configuration of the desired article, and curing the elastomeric layer and the other elastomeric component(s), the process being characterized by the step o partially curing said layer of elastomeric material by exposing it to irradiation by any high energy waves or particles imparting an adsorbed dose of 0 1 to 20 M rads before or after placing it in contact with said other elastomeric component(s). The layer of elastomeric material may be a non-discolouring non-black tyre sidewall strip, a thin gum strip to be placed under a non-black sidewall, a chafer strip, a veneer strip of reduced gauge to cover the non- black tyre sidewall during construction and curing of a tyre and which is removed by buffing or a tyre interliner. The elastomeric material may comprise a skim coating of natural or synthetic rubber, e.g. polybutadiene, a butadiene-styrene copolymer, polyisoprene, a butadiene-isoprene copolymer, a styrene-isoprene copolymer, a styrene-butadiene-isoprene copolymer or polyisoprene on a tyre cord fabric, specified cords being of cotton, polyester, rayon, nylon, glass fibre or steel.
