Abstract

1407795 Photopolymerizable materials; orthopaedic devices IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 Nov 1972 [29 Nov 1971] 55308/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division A5] A fabric article suitable for applying to a body member (e.g. neck, arm, leg or finger) is impregnated with at least one polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compound and at least one photosensitive catalyst comprising a photosensitizer activatable by visible light and a reducing agent capable of reducing the photosensitizer when the latter is in an activated state. the catalyst being capable of curing the polymerizable compound to convert the impregnated fabric article into an immobilizing orthopaedic device when the article is exposed to visible light. The orthopaedic device produced is lighter than conventional plaster of Paris casts and, furthermore, is permeable to X-rays. The fabric article may be woven or non-woven and formed from various materials, e.g. cotton, rayon, nylon, polyester or, preferably, glass fibre. The article is preferably in the form of an open structured woven or knitted bandage. Examples of usable polymerizable compounds are vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate, alkyl acrylate and methacrylate esters, styrene and alkyl-substituted styrenes, and hydroxyalkyl acrylates and methacrylates, and also polyunsaturated compounds such as divinyl benzene, glycol dimethacrylate and unsaturated urethane prepolymers, and also unsaturated polyesters. A polymeric material (e.g. polymethyl methacrylate) may be included to adjust the viscosity of the polymerizable material. Suitable initiators include uranyl salts, photosensitizer dyes, fluorenone and α-diketones and suitable reducing agents include compounds of the formula MR 3 where M is an element of Group Vb (e.g. N, P, As, Sb) and R represents H, hydrocarbyl or a substituted hydrocarbyl group and wherein two R's may be linked together to form a cyclic system with M, or a reducing agent such as allylamino compounds, allyl thiourea, o-tolyl thiourea, aromatic sulphinate salts and sodium diethyl dithiophosphate. The polymerizable material may optionally be pigmented or contain a filler. [GB1407795A]
