Abstract

1,260,213. Laminates including photopolymerized resin. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 7 Feb., 1969 [15 Feb., 1968], No. 6713/69. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B6 and C3] A laminate comprises two laminµ bonded by an interlayer obtained by photopolymerizing a composition containing an unsaturated polyester, at least one ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable monomer and a photopolymerization initiator, and is made by introducing the composition between the laminµ and subjecting to actinic radiation. Layers which may be bonded include polyamides, polyvinyl chloride, polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene, aluminium, tin, zinc, magnesium, chromium, "Duralumin" (Registered Trade Mark), stainless steel, glass, asbestos, silica, marble, wood. The unsaturated polyester has an average molecular weight of 1500-50,000 and an ethylenic double bond concentration of 2-20 Î 10<SP>-4</SP> mole/gm., and preferably has a concentration of at least 1 wt. per cent of inter-ester bond segments (as defined in the Specification) of molecular weight 80-1500. The unsaturated comonomers preferably comprise 10-80 wt. per cent of the composition, which may include 0À001-10 wt. per cent of photopolymerization initiator and 0À005-3 wt. per cent of a stabilizer against reaction in the dark. Long lists are given of suitable polyols, unsaturated dicarboxylic acids, anhydrides and esters and modifying dicarboxylic acids and esters and saturated carboxylic acids, anhydrides and esters for preparing the unsaturated polyesters, and of unsaturated comonomers, initiators and stabilizers. Polymerization may be induced by exposure to a source of radiation of wavelength below 7000 Š, e.g. carbon arc lamps, mercury lamps, ultraviolet fluorescent lamps, xenon lamps and sunlight, for 1-20 minutes at 5-100 cms. The following layer combinations are bonded in examples: (1)-(13), (23)-(37) and (39)- (43): glass-glass; (14)-(22): glass-polyvinyl chloride - polyvinyl chloride-glass; (38): glass - polymethylmethacrylate - glass; glasspolyvinyl chloride - glass; glass - polystyreneglass; glass - polyamide - glass; glass - aluminium - glass; glass - magnesium; glassasbestos; glass - marble; glass - wood; polyvinyl chloride- "Duralumin" (Registered Trade Mark); polymethylmethacrylate - tin; glasspolymethyl methacrylate - polymethylmethacrylate - glass; glass - polyvinyl chloridepolyvinyl chloride-glass. In Example (43) a patterned cellulosic plastics sheet is buried within the interlayer.
