Abstract

1343704 Adhesive pencil ADHESIVE TAPES Ltd 26 May 1972 [30 June 1971] 30757/71 Heading C4X [Also in Division C3] An adhesive pencil, which easily transfers adhesive to a substrate on soft rubbing, comprises an emulsion of a wax, forming the continuous hydrophilic phase, in which the adhesive is contained at least mainly in the disperse phase. The disperse phase generally comprises an aqueous solution of the adhesive, and optionally a tackifier such as a polyhydric alcohol. The emulsion is formed by passing the molten wax, generally containing a water-in-oil emulsifier to maintain an emulsion of the specified type, into a hot, stirred solution of the adhesive. In the examples the adhesive solution comprises one or more of polymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone, dextrin and polyvinyl alcohols in water together with one or more additives selected from sorbitol, glycerol, polyethylene glycol, sodium hexametaphosphate, and a commercial aqueous acrylic copolymer solution. The wax is selected from ester waxes, carnauba wax, montan wax, paraffin wax, polyethylene wax and microcrystalline wax and may also contain a rosin derivative as a tackifier. Non-ionic emulsifiers, e.g. fatty acid esters or glycerides, or alkylene oxide condensates of phenols or fatty acids, are preferred but anionic or cationic (e.g. ethoxylated amine) emulsifiers may also be used.
