1371329 Film fibrillation SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 26 Nov 1971 [30 Nov 1970] 56801/70 Headings B5A and B5B [Also in Division B6] Fibres are prepared by fibrillation of films of thermoplastic polymer by a process in which closely spaced, parallel, longitudinally extending grooves are impressed into the film at a temperature below the crystalline melting point of the polymer, and the film stretched longitudinally before being fibrillated. The grooves are formed by means of a profiling unit which consists of a plain roller 3 and a ridged roller 4, the ridges on ridged roller 4 being parallel and tapered to a rounded peak. The film is cast on to the surface of plain roller 4 at a temperature above the crystalline melting point of the component polymer. The film passes around plain roller 3 and through the nip between rollers 3 and 4 where the grooves are formed, the film being cooled to a temperature below the crystalline melting point before passing through the nip. The cooling may be effected by an an air blast 3<SP>1</SP>, or by internally cooled roller 3. The film is stretched between Godet assemblies 6 and 8, stretching being assisted by heating in the oven 7. Stretching can cause the fibres to separate, but fibrillation may be completed by known means at 9. Preferably an air blast fibrillator is used. The process is exemplified by the preparation of polypropylene fibres.
