Abstract

1303971 Embossing E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 6 Jan 1971 [6 Jan 1970] 19 Aug 1970] 656/71 Heading B6J Biaxially oriented polyester film is rendered suitable for winding into uniform stable rolls by producing on one surface a multiplicity of transverse ridges having a length-to-width ratio greater than 1 : 1 and a peak-to-valley height of at least 10 microinches. The film is passed through the nip of a pair of slowly rotating rollers and then between radiant heaters to a pair of faster rotating rollers to be stretched longitudinally. One of the second pair of rollers is an embossing roller which has been roughened and provided with a pattern having a total surface variation of 150-600 microinches. The other of the second pair may have a silicone rubber finish and is kept cool, e.g. at 90‹ C., by contact with a cooling roller. The film is passed over a quench roller at about 15‹ C., and is then transversely stretched.
