Abstract
1350304 Sprinkler system for building framework "FOKKER-VFW" NV 15 Oct 1971 [11 Jan 1971] 48063/71 Heading A5A A building structure comprising vertical columns and horizontal girders of constant cross-section metal and one or more threedimensional building modules supported thereby is protected by an automatic fireextinguishing system arranged so that the columns and/or girders are constantly and totally wetted when extinguishing liquid, particularly water, is discharged from nozzles or jets. In Fig. 1 a building framework comprises hollow steel columns 1 interconnected by steel beams 2, additional girders 3 providing support surfaces for building modules 4. Vertical extinguishant conduit 5 and horizontal branches 6 are provided with outlet nozzles arranged to deluge the columns, beams and girders, e.g. at junctions 7 of the framework. The nozzles may have fusible plugs so that only those in the vicinity of a fire are actuated. Conduit 5 is connected to the water main via valve 8 which may be operated by a smoke detector. Alternatively lines 5, 6 may be filled with pressurised C0 2 or N 2 and valve 8 opened by the pressure drop occurring when a fusible plug melts. Part of the extinguishant conduit may be of fusible plastic, the nozzles being actuated on melting thereof. In Fig. 2 conduit sections (10) are provided with nozzles along all lower columns and generate a water curtain separating adjoining building modules.
