Abstract

1358987 Stretching coated films; fibrillating films; laminates LAMBEG INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 29 July 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 39029/70 Headings B5B and B5N [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] A substantially undrawn plastics film is treated with particles of another material which either adhere to or are partially embedded within the film which is thereafter mono- or biaxially stretched and optionally fibrillated. The particles may remain on or become substantially detached from the film. The film may be freshly extruded on to a chill roll, and the particles applied thereto by an air blast, by pressing them in using another roller, by sprinkling them on the film, or by applying them from a carrier film which may become laminated to the first film. The film and/or particles may be in a softened condition dicing coating. In examples: (1) a polypropylene film is coated with polyethylene powder from a vibrating hopper via an intermediate endless conveyer belt, the film being thereafter stretched and fibrillated and finally converted to a non-woven web by heating to fuse the fibres with the polyethylene component ; (2) a polypropylene film is sandwiched with another polypropylene film carrying nylon particles, the resultant bicomponent film being stretched and fibrillated; (3) chalk powder is embedded in polypropylene film using a backing roller against the chill roller, and the film stretched and fibrillated with the loss of substantially all the chalk; (4) a polyethylene film is coated as in (3) with a clay-cellulose powder giving a paper-substitute. In case (4) the cellulose may be replaced by a thermoplastic resin and the resultant film calendered. [GB1358987A]
