Abstract
1302142 Antibiotics from Micromonospora rosana SCHERICO Ltd 19 April 1971 [22 Jan 1970] 20147/71 Heading C2A [Also in Division AS] The invention comprises an antibiotically active substance designated Antibiotic 67-694, which substance, at a potency of substantially 1000 Ágm/mgm has the following characteristics: an elemental analysis corresponding to the empirical formula C 31 H 51 NO 9 , a molecular weight determined by mass spectrometry of 581, m.p. 110-114 C., a specific optical rotation measured at 25 C. and at the sodium D-line at 0À3 per cent concentration of -33À40, an ultraviolet absorption maximum at 240 mÁ with an E<SP>1%</SP> 1cm of 238, an infra-red absorption spectrum in mineral oil as in Fig. 1, a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum in CDCl 3 as in Fig. 2 and is antibacterially active against a range of organisms, in free form or in the form of a pharmaceutically acceptable derivative. The invention also comprises a process for the production of the above antibiotic which comprises cultivating a micro-organism of the species Micromoziospora rosana in a nutrient medium under areobic conditions until substantial antibiotic activity is imparted to the medium. Antibiotic 67-694 may be separated into at least two constituents by chromatography. Pharmaceutical compositions suitable for oral, parenteral or topical application may be prepared from the antibiotic 67-694 in conjunction with pharmaceutically acceptable carriers. Also antiseptic and antibacterial washes which contain antibiotic 67-694 may be prepared.
